Bloodfly (Night Man enemy) (Ultraverse comics)

Power Level:
Game system: DC Heroes Role-Playing Game

Bloodfly is an opponent of the Night Man. She appeared but once, in 1995.

Night Man was one of the characters of the Ultraverse, one of the early 1990s attempts at launching new super-hero comic book universes. Unfortunately, most such settings were casualties of a market collapse some years later.

Powers and Abilities

Bloodfly is a remarkably fast and agile flyer. She has insect-like strength and durability. It seems her powers are patterned after a butterfly’s.

Bloodfly seems connected with one professor Papillon (French for “Butterfly”), who conducted research at Berkeley in biology. His work started to grow too big and budget-consuming for the university, and he moved to a private research space. He brought with him a female graduate student who worked closely with him, and probably became Bloodfly.

The building where he was conducting his research was damaged during a quake. When the Night Man investigated, he found a small army of half-insect, half-men, all-slime being incubated in large cocoons. It is likely Bloodfly became what she is now in such a cocoon.

Fly, my pretties

What is certain is that Bloodfly appeared over San Francisco one night, robbing penthouses and killing anything that got in her way. Night Man unsuccessfully tried to stop her several time, but her abilities, and especially her ability to fly, made her impossible to catch. She then turned the tables on him, starting to stalk him and attack him whenever he didn’t expect it.

Night Man finally defeated Bloodfly in the ruins of Papillon’s private lab ; the quake-damaged building then collapsed on the unconscious, possibly dead Bloodfly, and a large number of slimy butterfly-men.

See illustration.

Bloodfly is obsessed with :

  1. Her superiority over everything else.
  2. Her wonderful abilities.
  3. Ruling over those inferiors who cannot fly and stay stuck on the ground.

She insists on killing anyone who stands in her path.

She also uses various insect metaphors when taunting her opponents, or commenting a situation.

“I have all the strength it takes to fly, to kill, to destroy anyone not as evolved as I !”

“I have a human body, but the strength I need to lift it into the sky is pure insect ! I had a human mind, but that’s pure insect too ! I have no mercy !”

There’d be ties with Charaxes, I reckon.
