Anna Wei v1

Anna Wei v1

By Sébastien Andrivet

Source of Character: Iron Man Annual 2001

Reasons (1): Anna seems to have been largely intended as fan service, TBH - beautiful and loving Asian martial artist/computer hacker who has a scene dressed as a leather-clad sex kitten and almost immediately falls for the hero ? C'mon. Still, there's potential for her to become a more interesting character.

Reasons (2): The Republic of Sarawak (not to be confused with the real-world region of Sarawak, in Malaysia) is an exaggerated, more paranoid and authoritarian version of Singapore. If you want to do without imaginary city-states, this adventure could have occurred in Singapore - just tune down the exaggerated elements and assume that the Singaporeans had legitimate reason to be very wary of Stark (perhaps a senior executive at the local Stark branch had just been revealed to be part of a terrorist network, or some such).

Advantages: Expertise (Sarawak governmental IT systems), Headquarters (her shop and apartment), Language (Mandarin Chinese)
Connections: Tony Stark (Low)
Drawbacks: Debt (the pressure from the Po mob reduced her effective Resources to 04), Dependent (Kiko), Enemy (Mister Po). After she gets to the US the Debt and Enemy both disappear, but she gains a Secret ID.
Equipment:
  • Anna has a bunch of computer equipment and spare parts in her shop - it seems to be roughly the equivalent of a 7 APs lab for computer hardware purposes.
  • During Kiko's rescue, she was equipped with night vision goggles, and a micro-video camera in her choker with a wifi uplink - standard commercial equipment with a few modifications. Stark and her also built a pair of interface suits - using proprietary Stark technology, those could transmit the moves of the wearers to the suit in real-time and provide a video feedback. Those suits had built-in holographic disguise abilities, allowing them to mimic pre-programmed sets of clothing.

Powers and Abilities

Anna is very accomplished in what seems to be a Northern Chinese style of kickboxing - possibly a wushu school. She is entirely able to apply it with devastating efficiency to streetfighting situations, and in fact has demonstrated that she could beat up several proficient brawlers/martial artists at once. In such situations she prefers to keep her sub for OV and not get hit - she's fast and precise but not very robust.

Her other talents include being very attractive and having superior people skills - she has a very warm and caring manner that translate as high INF and AUR. She is also a superlative computer hacker (proficient at hacking even the highly secure Sarawak official systems), CS engineer and a professional electronics and computer hardware engineer. Stark found it very pleasant to work with her, since she was working very fast with a very strong technical, creative and design intuition.

Anna did not know who Tony Stark was, so she presumably has little interest in international and business news ; however her son seems to be an avid comic books reader, so she likely knows a bit about US and Asian superhumans.

History:

Anna Wei's family has been living in the warren of back streets behind the old port in Sarawak (the comic book one, not the Malaysian state) for generations. This neighbourhood is traditionally home to a large number of small shops offering cutting-edge services ; for the last few decades many of those have been computer shops. Ms. Wei owned her own, thriving shop, which was reputed both for her technical expertise and her customer-facing skills. However, like presumably all shops in the area, she had to pay protection money to one mister Po and his mob.

Anna ran into Tony Stark after the later, as Iron Man, was shot down over Sarawak by the authorities. Stashing the armour away, he was trying to come up with a way of getting out there without being noticed when he stumbled on a street gang threatening to beat up Kiko, Anna's son. Stark attempted to hold off the gang, but they were too numerous and skilled for him. However he bought enough time for Anna to arrive and scatter the gang ; in return Stark charged the arriving police to give her and Kiko time to escape from the authorities. During the brawl he lost his wallet, but Kiko found it and kept it for him.

Intending to pay the favour back, Anna hacked the corrections administration's database and had the 'anonymous indigent' released, though she paid his bail with real money, presumably due to stringent cross-controls with the banking system.

She then met with Stark when he was thrown out in the prison, and took him to her house as a guest of the family. Playing dumb in order not to compromise his secret identity, Stark did the menial chores in the house as a rent of sorts. After a time he started working on recovering his armour, and Ms. Wei busted him after noticing the considerable upgrades he performed on her computers in order to facilitate his hacking work. Eventually, she decided to continue trusting him, and after shagging some they started working together to design sophisticated infiltration equipment to recover Stark's hidden armour.

Armouring up

Meanwhile, Kiko found a tracker leading to the Iron Man armour and decided to use that asset to bargain with Po's mob so as to free his mother from their clutches. The mob took both the suit and Kiko, and Stark and Wei's mission became to rescue of both Kiko and the armour. Wei pretended she had come to pay her debt toward Po that month in sexual favours rather than money, and while the goons were distracted by her outfit Stark, guiding himself via a video feed from Wei's choker, sneaked in and activated the Iron Man suit.

However, in the ensuing hail of gunfire, Wei reacted by shoving her son into the armour to protect him, making it impossible for Stark to suit up -- and returning control of the armour to a virus that had previously infected it. The armour flew away, which alerted the Sarawak military.

Teaming up again, Stark had Wei take physical control of the suit via her interface suit. She engaged the power armour-clad Sarawak troopers through the suit using her martial arts skills (a tactic the troops did not expect from Iron Man) while Stark worked on erasing the virus. As he worked he reactivated the armour's subsystems in sequence, using them then handing over weapon systems to Anna as they become available. They fought off the troops and managed to fly into international waters, where they were rescued by the Avengers.

Americanising up

Given her engineering talents, Stark decided to hire Wei to head a R&D centre in San Francisco and arranged for a new ID for her, as an American-born US citizen with a full paper trail (her new name, and her son's new name, have not been revealed).

Ms. Wei was never seen again - presumably she and Stark decided not to pursue their burgeoning relationship. She presumably still works as a star R&D tech lead for Stark Enterprises.

Personality

Ms. Wei is caring, warm and loving. In her technical work (whether electronics, coding or fighting), she shows a marked economy of movement ; likewise in her life she tends to have a fatalistic streak and a significant Confucian outlook, accepting and making the best of whatever the universe floats her way. She accepted Stark in her house without any question or apparent reservation - she just was grateful for his help and instinctively knew she could trust him.

A large part of her life revolve around her son, and they share a strong bond and a mutually protective attitude. The kid wants to be the man of the house and provide for his mother, though, which tends to lead him in trouble since he's too young to know what he's doing ; Kiko is very smart for his age, but that tends to cause more problems than it solves. Anna would sacrifice absolutely anything to ensure his safety and happiness.

Anna copes well with danger (as long as it's not to her son), though the violence and complexity of a superhuman fight (such as Iron Man vs. an army of men in flying power armour) can eventually overwhelm her if it escalates too far. These things take specialised training and/or experience.
