Source of Character: Starfire #1-8 (1976) (probably set in the DC Universe). The original writer was David Michelinie, followed by Elliot S! Maggin and finally Steve Englehart. Not bad, uh ? It was an era where DC had some difficulty letting a writer work on a book more than 4-5 issues.

Reasons (1): There are S P O I L E R S, but on the other hand it was 35+ years ago and I don’t think it was ever reprinted.

Reasons (2): The story has some chronological impossibilities centring around how long ago the invasion took place - which are largely the result of a change in writers. This entry goes for four centuries since the invasion (as per Starfire #8), ignores small issues (such as the date of the death of Kyrse’s mother) and resolves most by assuming that antebellum humans were very long-lived.

  • Hunting knife [BODY 04, EV 03 (05 w/STR wielded, 04 w/STR thrown), Can be Thrown]. Against medium-sized groups of opponents, Starfire will open with a thrown knife, trying to get rid of one foe before the rest are in melee range. Against large groups, she’ll keep her knife in reserve for when she’s in trouble - for instance, if she loses her sword.
  • After she finds the Lightning Lords fortress, Starfire starts packing a Laser Pistol [BODY 08, Laser beam: 07]. She prefers fighting with melee weapons, but if the odds are overwhelming she’ll start fighting with a blade and her laser.
  • In the last issue the band had captured a floater - a sort of flying car, perhaps powered by anti-gravity. The capabilities of this vehicle are unknown ; a baseline might be [STR 06 BODY 09, Flying: 08]. Like the rest of pre-aliens human technology, this piece of equipment is likely extremely easy to use, very robust and seemingly able to run forever.

The world of Starfire

Siren of swords and science !

Starfire’s world boasted an advanced technology (including antigravity, teleportation and energy weapons, though the computer workstations look oddly like 1970s ones) and great cities. The local humans were long-lived, presumably through scientific enhancements - from what we can piece together Starfire’s mentor was at least 400 years old, though he looked in his late 30s, and Lady Djinn and Thump were about as old. Other people (such as the underground war priests) had more normal lifespans, though.

However, the politics were dominated by an ancient feud between two major civilisations, locked in an endless war and arms race. The war lasted so long that it became sacred, and the religious orders took charge of it, with the men of the cloth becoming “war priests”. This clergy mastered both combat and tactics, and became the holders of scientific and occult knowledge. Eventually, one side’s priests managed to summon reinforcements - ferocious aliens called the Mygorg. It was hoped that those allies would help break the seemingly eternal tie ; however the other side eventually managed to summon otherdimensional opponents of the Mygorg - the Yorgs.

What then happened was not a new stalemate - though bitter enemies, both the Mygorg and the Yorgs soon realised they could outpower the humans, and rebelled against their respective masters. The rebellion was successful, and all humans were soon reduced to slavery, serving and fighting at the whims of their alien masters. Starfire’s area is clearly dominated by the Mygorgs - perhaps the Mygorgs and Yorgs each dominate the former territory of the human nation that originally summoned them, or perhaps things are more complicated. Yorg troops stated that they now controlled half of Starfire’s world, but this may have been a reference to night vs. day rather than a geographical expanse.

Due to the reverence of the Mygorg for physical prowess, firearms and energy weapons were all destroyed once they asserted control, leaving everyone to fight with melee weapons, bows and the like. Since Mygorgs do not appear to have special qualities - they’re large and strong and good soldiers, but nothing crushing - and were always depicted as wielding melee weapons, how they could be such a military power in the context of the humans’s war is unknown.

By Starfire’s time, the Mygorg had little visible technology - they fought with melee weaponry, preferred spears for making ranged attacks, rode horses and other beasts, camped in simple tents, etc. They did have access to some exotic monsters from their home dimension, though. It is possible that the various monsters Starfire encountered in the wild were originally from the Mygorg’s dimension - particularly the various sorts of giant lizards. The Mygorgs also preferred a pastoral life - Starfire’s area was vast stretches of wilderness punctuated by small, isolated settlements with medieval-style fortifications.

Only a young woman’s sword and her courage will challenge the inhuman hordes who would enslave her people !

The aliens on Starfire’s world could not be observed in detail, but here are the known facts.

Mygorgs
The Mygorgs have about Growth: 01, DEX 03 STR 04 BODY 03 and Weaponry (Melee, Thrown): 04 in DCH terms — or in DCA terms STR 2 STA 2, a +3 unnarmed attack bonus and a +5 total attack bonus with their melee weapon. They don’t usually have Hero Points or notable advantages. They’re essentially large orcs, and didn’t perform much better than Starfire’s freedom fighters.

One of their key advantages are large reptiles with special powers that can reach 9-10 APs (8 or 9 Ranks in DCA) - wingless dragons with a cold breathe weapon, pterodactyls with eyebeams, giant half-humanoid lizard fighters, etc.

Presumably the Mygorgs have other assets if they outgunned the humans, but nothing was ever demonstrated. Perhaps they have an invincible Dune-style force field technology protecting against high-tech weapons and forcing high-tech troops to go mano-a-mano against them ; perhaps they have access to reptilian monsters that are way more powerful than the ones seen in Starfire and those are but minor paramilitary pets. One also gets the impression that the Mygorgs who came to Starfire’s world were excellent fighters, but their descendants living as idle slave lords were markedly inferior in fitness and martial expertise.

Yorgs
The Yorgs are closer to being shadow demons - they look a bit like the Shadow-Thief, and stated that they were the opposite pole of life. They have a smoke-like quality, and seem able to teleport into any area with deep shadows or aberrant magical energy. in DCH they might have something like DEX 03 STR 03 BODY 03, Dispersal: 03, Fluid form: 03, Teleportation: 09 (Limited as per above), Ultra-vision: 04.

Their preferred attack is to engulf a victim in shadows (Magic blast: 07, No Range - Starfire could overcome it though she was surprised and weakened). Several panels show them shooting red optic blasts. They could also use the magic interfaces described in the next section.

Yorgs apparently cannot enter an area bathed in sunlight. Light-based weaponry (such as lasers) will also completely ignore their Dispersal and Fluid form. When a Yorg is exposed to such light - or maybe when he dies - the cloak of shadows around his body disperses, leaving a naked purple humanoid.

In DCA a basic Yorg has STR 1 STA 2, a +3 unarmed bonus, Senses 2 (Darkvision), Insubstantial 1, Protection 9 and Enhanced Fortitude 7. They can engulf a person with a no-range Affliction 7 attack (something like dazed/exhausted/incapacitated). Their Protection and Enhanced Fortitude have a Quirk making them not apply against Bright Light, Laser and closely-related descriptors.

A woman rebel in an enslaved world !

Though Starfire’s world is chiefly presented as a scientific one - to differentiate it from a typical fantasy world - magic does exist and play a role. Starfire’s companion Dagan called it “counter-science”, and though the war priests of old knew about it, it seems to have been less intensively used than science and engineering. The one big exception, of course, was the summoning of the Mygorgs and Yorgs.

Both races were summoned from “a nether void”, which in context of David Michelinie’s other works of that period presumably means a chaos dimension. Mygorgs did not seem to use magic much, whereas Yorgs seem to be inherently magical. Since they were opponents, it is entirely possible that Mygorgs are law creatures and Yorgs chaos creatures - see below for more considerations about the Fifteen Worlds context. The Yorg-held territories on Starfire’s world might be more overtly magical, but during her adventures on Mygorg turf Starfire only ever encountered one spellcaster (and some Yorgs).

Starfire has called the Mygorgs and Yorgs demons and death-worshippers, but it is impossible to say whether it was vituperation or a statement of fact. 

Starfire encountered but one spellcaster, Lady Djinn, so it is difficult to draw conclusions about how magic worked on her word. Djinn could cast spells with the standard comic book visuals (à la Doctor Strange), and was observed performing the following:

  • Paralysing eldritch bolts, though they didn’t work on Thump until she grabbed his metallic amulet and cast her spell through it
  • An orange telekinetic aura that could move heavy objects (a paralysed Thump)
  • Spells that mutated Thump’s appearance, increased his Physical Attributes and caused amnesia, but couldn’t fully make him forget (Mutation, Hypnosis and others)
  • Spells of technical maintenance, sensing dysfunctional computer hardware and magically fixing it. These spells were fire-and-forget (they’d keep running even without Djinn’s supervision) but performing sorcery with computer hardware was considered unnatural. Left unsupervised, it created a field of aberrant force that drew the attention of Yorgs within minutes - they could zero in on it from a great distance and were able to teleport within the field.

Both the Yorgs and Lady Djinn used cantrips allowing them to open or close automated doors and windows with but a gesture. There seems to be some sort of magical interface to allow for this built into some installations. This is presumably a Yorg trick, since there seems to be a link between the unnatural results of merging science and sorcery and the Yorgs.

Powers and Abilities

Starfire is a well-trained and very energetic fighter, warrior, hunter and survivor, who has killed numerous opponents with her blade. Furthermore, she is very strong for her size and frame - she once wrenched from a wall medium-sized chains holding her. She also displayed superior agility and courage.

She’s a natural with all sorts of action skills - if it involves fighting, climbing up and down stuff, sneaking around, death-defying acrobatics or… anything where you could get hurt pretty badly, Starfire can do it even without any training. If she does train with those skills, she will achieve a cinematic level of proficiency within an impossibly short time. One suspects that she has some sort of superhuman learning ability in her preferred fields, though that doesn’t change anything in game terms.

This extends to laser weapons - she used them quite effectively within seconds of grabbing the first pistol she ever saw, and quickly graduated to being able to dual-wield a cutlass and her pistol. Since Moonwatcher displayed the same proficiency, the weapons may be optimised to be used with no training whatsoever. They are also pretty robust - Thump could use a rifle as a club without damaging it.

More context — the Fifteen Worlds

Starfire, champion of the Sornaii

Starfire and other stories written by David Michelinie during the DC Explosion share a context, that of an eternal war between war and chaos inspired by classic Michael Moorcock novels. In that context, Starfire is presumably a champion of law and the aliens champions of chaos - but the cancellation of Starfire, Claw the Unconquered and Star Hunters meant that the shared background was never explained.

The writeups.org entry for Claw the Unconquered extensively discusses the Fifteen Worlds cosmology, since this is where much of the information appears - though it was in Star Hunters that Starfire, Claw the Unconquered and Flint Donovan (see their writeups.org entries !) were said to all be Champions of the Sornaii, which we assume means the divinities of Law. It is vaguely possible that the Unknown Soldier was a fourth such Champion.

How the time of Claw, the DCU, the time of Starfire, the universe of the Star Hunters and other realities such as the Marvel Universe’s Hyborea or Stalker’s world interact is unknown, and is discussed in the Claw entry. It seems likely that Starfire exists in the far future of the world of Claw, which may or may not be the DCU Earth.

Amusingly, the Starfire run contains an anecdotal tie to the Marvel Universe - a Mygorg swears by the Moons of Munnopor, a mystical place often referred to in the pages of Doctor Strange - but no reference to the DCU. In the context of the Fifteen Worlds and their porosity with the Marvel Universe, this might be turned into an important clue - perhaps Mygorgs came from Universe-616.

The Fifteen Planets ?

The original Who’s Who in the DC Universe lists Starfire as operating on “an unnamed planet in another star system”, whereas the nature of the planet is never specified in the stories. This is but a secondary source, but this inspires some possibilities beyond those covered in our Fifteen Worlds discussion in the Claw the Unconquered entry.

If we can be forgiven this flight of fancy, this may mean that the Fifteen Worlds are actually a system of eight habitable planets - a peculiar solar system, perhaps shaped through some paranormal intervention like the Vega system. In this context, this corner of space has thin dimensional barriers, and the entire solar system is but one AP of Dimensional Distance away from another universe - perhaps this is a property of the star(s) of the solar system that engender this (could this hypothetical star be a first, failed attempt at assembling the Starheart ?). Thus, rather than encompassing the DC Universe and others as a grand cosmology, the Fifteen Worlds are a more local matter within the DC Universe.

In this hypothesis, the recurrent theme of the invasion from beyond becomes a single invasion by an alliance of alien races - or perhaps just the Mygorgs and the Yorgs, with the Yorgs assaulting some of the world through conjured demons rather than as themselves. Dgrth and Satan (from Stalker and Beowulf) are powerful Yorgs who do not look like the scout subspecies seen in Starfire.

The dimensional properties of the star(s) of this system make it easy to use magic to move to anyplace strongly bathed in their light, teleporting from planet to planet as easily as from one kingdom to the next. The same is even truer on the “other side” of the dimensional divide, where negative versions of the star(s) are more powerful.

Gee, what fun is to be had with the Fifteen Worlds !

History

The Mygorg considered Starfire as something between a collector’s item and a pet with a rare pedigree, since she was bred to have blue eyes, Asian features and a pale Asian complexion. Thus, she was not spent as a menial labourer, and was selected from birth to be a house pet and slave. Given this role, she even received a modicum of education - even including reading and writing - plus of course the usual conditioning to be reflexively obedient to any form of authority.

As she grew up, Starfire developed into a beautiful young woman, and as such was selected to graduate from house pet to sex toy for the local Mygorg lord, one Sookaroth. Upon learning this, Starfire attempted to flee, but her obedience conditioning meant this attempt was feeble and she was easily recaptured. However, she had had time to run pretty far from Mygorg turf, into the wilderness.

War priest Dagan

This is how she was spotted by a free human - a war priest named Dagan wearing the traditional blade and gaudy uniform of his caste. Spotting Starfire being recaptured, the man leapt in, killed several Mygorgs and fled in his floater (a sort of flying car) with the slave.

Dagan spent weeks breaking Starfire’s obedience conditioning, so she would stop unquestioningly carrying out every order she was given. He made good progress, though she was still unable to stop calling him master and treating him like a senior authority figure.

Dagan also taught the free slave the skills she would need not to be a burden living in the dangerous wilderness - swordsplay, archery, tracking, spear throwing, and the like. That part was a stunning success, as Starfire demonstrated genius-level aptitudes for those and learned within weeks what some would take years to drill through.

Finally, Dagan taught Starfire the history of humans on their world, hoping to help break the slave conditioning. This did not work as well as he had hoped but, perhaps unsurprisingly given Starfire’s preferences, progress came from a more action-oriented situation. The ex-slave stumbled upon a large and dangerous predator, but she and Dagan prevailed through teamwork. Elated by the victory, Starfire became Dagan’s lover. These developing feelings greatly accelerated the deprogramming, making Starfire more of her own woman and less of a Mygorg house pet.

Some weeks later, as Starfire was away hunting, Mygorgs raided their camp and captured Dagan. Having no idea of what to do without somebody to give her orders, Starfire sneaked into the fortress of Sookaroth to recover Dagan so she’d know what she should do. However, the war priest had been tortured and was dying. Dagan died in her arms.

This tragedy consumed any remaining desire within Starfire to live as a slave. Though in tears, she freed the human prisoners from the Mygorg oubliettes, grabbed a cutlass and sparked and led a revolt. She met Sookaroth in a duel and killed him, leaving her and her rebellious slaves in control of the keep.

Revolution !

This situation was untenable, as the Mygorg would soon learn of the revolt and sent in a relief force. Starfire took her rag-tag forces cross-country to escape retaliation by a superior force.

The band came across another isolated keep. They attacked the few Mygorg there by surprise and quickly slew them, freeing another outpost for a time. While many of the slaves were happy to provide hospitality and supplies to the free humans, the castellan was furious - though the free humans had just killed the oppressors and saved his son whom the Mygorgs were about to kill, he dreaded the retaliation of the aliens and objected to any project of rebellion.

The retaliation came quicker than even the castellan expected, but the fiery Starfire’s decisive actions won the day. Impressed, the castellan’s boy gave the rebels a precious document - a map to the stronghold of an organisation called the Lightning Lords, who hid advanced weapons when the Mygorgs ordered the destruction of such armaments.

The Mygorgs were reinforced and attacked again, with a sky-beast on point - a sort of giant pterodactyl shooting eyebeams and with a very thick hide. Using a lasso and some acrobatics, Starfire killed the Mygorg rider of the sky-beast, wounded it and provoked it into blindly chasing her. She then dashed through the surprised Mygorg ranks, with the sky-beast’s beams raining destruction on her enemies.

Map of the problematique

Starfire seized the momentum and had her forces exfiltrate the castle before it was too late. The boy with the map was accidentally killed by his father, who thought he was a rebel. While Starfire still had the map and they had evaded the Mygorg troops, the boy had been the only one who could read the script on the map.

Bereft of a clear goal, Starfire’s rebel continued to wander the countryside and raid small Mygorg settlements. One such raid destroyed a minor outdoors arena, where Starfire recruited a key ally - the gigantic mute she named Thump. Thump could read Mygorg script and thus the map, and started directing the rebels toward the Lightning Lords cache. The group was also joined by the skilled but untrustworthy scout Moonwatcher.

Though hopes were high, the rebels were raided in turn - a band of alien humanoids called nitrons ambushed them and stole their food and supplies. Having to quickly resupply, they ran into an oddity - a Mygorgs-free settlement, run by a human queen and where all males were slaves. The roaming rebels where liberally given hospitality, food and security, and most decided that they’re rather forego their harsh existence with Starfire and remain guests of the queen.

It was a trap - the queen had been rendered psychotic and with a pathological hatred of men by traumatic events. Though she liked Starfire, the two fought to the death when Starfire discovered her plans. Having resupplied, the rebels sided with Starfire again and made a fighting exit against the queen’s guard, hitting the wilderness again. Starfire, Thump and the fickle followers then resumed trekking toward the weapons cache.

The Lightning Lords

As it turned out, the Lightning Lords had regressed in sophistication and technology. They met Starfire and Thump with hostility, swords and some automated defences. Starfire and Thump defeated a robot tank, but were captured and imprisoned. As it turned out, Thump understood the technology around them much better than the Lightning Lords. Starfire and her giant friend got out of their cell, killed a guardian beast and had the Lightning Lords superstitiously accept them as leaders.

Thus did Starfire and Thump come into contact with Keeper and his unreliable ally Djinn the Lady of the Lightning, a sorceress — see the Thump entry on writeups.org for more. Starfire stayed within the complex for the night, but warily kept her men in reserve outside

However, Starfire’s forces erred. They impulsively attacked a small Mygorg party when it passed by, but this was just the vanguard of a much larger force. Much of Starfire’s army, including almost all her lieutenants, was captured.

Alien shadows

Starfire soon found her wariness justified - the alien Yorgs, looking like living shadows, seeped into the Lightning Lord fortress to remind Djinn that they had a deal and that she wasn’t to help rebels such as Starfire. Escaping from the aliens, Starfire stumbled on a small weapons locker within the fortress, and drew a laser pistol from it. Suddenly, she had a very efficient means of killing the shadow-like Yorgs.

Meanwhile, the Keeper computer tried to help her by teleporting in her captured lieutenants. The attempt was a failure, though, and most of them were killed.

Starfire freed Thump from the spell Djinn had cast on him, learning the truth about Thump and Keeper (see Thump’s entry). At this point, Starfire was hopelessly separated from her troops and the Lightning Lords fortress was being raided by both the Mygorgs and the Yorgs, who started fighting each other. Further adding to the confusion, the Keeper computer took his revenge on Lady Djinn, and the Mygorgs attacked the Lightning Lords as they thought they were allies of the Yorgs.

Thump managed to remember enough to calibrate the teleportation machines so they’d be safe, and Starfire and her two remaining allies - Thump and Moonwatcher - teleported out with a small stash of laser weapons.

Though there were but three of them, Starfire and her men were right behind Mygorg lines and now had considerable firepower. They routed the Mygorg forces thanks to the element of surprise, allowing the Lightning Lords to win the battle. The victory was on the Pyrrhic side - they were but a dozen of Lightning Lord fighters left alive. However, they considered Thump to be their prophesied saviour and immediately agreed to join him. Furthermore, they told Starfire about another safe site called Haven.

The quest for Haven

Starfire and her men rounded up what was left of her original band - which at that point was chiefly made up of non-combatants. Moonwatcher convinced the aggressive Starfire that continuing the fight the Mygorgs with such scant troops was impossible, and that the should locate Haven for the sake of their followers’s safety.

One aged Lightning Lord among the lot knew about Haven, and explained it was an island without any aliens and ruled by free humans. A Haven person had once given him a signet and vague directions. Starfire and Thump agreed to pursue that lead, and the disparate posse headed toward Haven to live in peace.

The old man with the signet was killed by a giant spider as the troop was crossing mountains. However, this death led to an important discovery - the corpse of an albino man dressed like Dagan had been. Looking for other war priests, the rebels found a hidden, underground city founded four centuries ago. Inhabited by priests still commanding pre-invasion technology, these men had chosen to hide from the alien rather than fight them.

Things turned quite sour. The leader of the hidden enclave was a traitorous sadist, and like many of the men she met he wanted to own Starfire. He betrayed her and her lieutenants and imprisoned them all. However, Starfire managed to free everyone and flee in a stolen floater.

Though the encounter with the hidden war priests had been a disaster, Starfire had acquired a key information. The Eye of Armageddon, the device used to summon in the Mygorgs, still existed - and destroying it would make the Mygorg vanish, or at least cut them off their home base.

And on that thunderous revelation, the book was cancelled. The “next issues on sale on the second week of September” we were promised never materialised, though admittedly DC never specified the year.

After the DC Implosion

Starfire wasn’t glimpsed again in decades, except in a tall tale narrated by the Space Ranger. However, she was spotted again when , in 2010, an improvised chronal beacon of Rip Hunter was bollixed and sent three of his allies - Superman, Green Lantern Hal Jordan and Booster Gold - close to Starfire.

There were… oddities about this appearance, however - a sort of gas giant with at least one large satellite was clearly visible in the sky (which was never the case in Starfire, though the moon was oddly yellow), Mygorgs were using floaters and very powerful energy guns to shoot at unarmed humans (which was anathema to their ethos) and Starfire was still wearing her slave uniform - something she’d be unlikely to want to return to. Starfire was also depicted with green eyes (though they were blue on one panel, and eye colour in comics is a perennial source of inconsistency anyway).

This Starfire was briefly, accidentally involved in the heroes’s quest in finding Batman in the timestream, and ended up fighting along with them against a chronomancer. She was then returned to her time and place.

Given the important discrepancies, this Starfire was presumably a parallel version of the original - perhaps the post-Crisis version.

Description

Though she has a mostly gender-neutral attitude and behaviour, Starfire’s remarkable beauty frequently incites lust in random males, even alien ones. Some of these men will even attempt to manhandle her and force themselves on her, forcing her to use various throws and locks to coerce them into leaving her alone. Such behaviour likely reflects the place of women in the Mygorg-managed society - as servants near the bottom of the totem pole and as sex objects. The slave costume seems specifically designed to emphasis her best features (which would be about everything since she has the typical comic-book-perfect body) and offer flattering support to the more curvaceous parts, as befits her assigned role as a decorative pet

Starfire apparently fled with her favourite lipstick tubes (one red one and a pale pink one). Maybe they’re her lucky lipsticks.

Starfire originally ran around in her old green slave outfit ; once she found the Lightning Lords base she bartered some supplies for an outfit that was more suited to life in the outdoors, and included a cape. This outfit did not last long - it was fatally ripped when it was accidentally caught by a rusty nail whilst she was fighting the Yorg. She discarded the torn fabric, and from then on operated in short shorts and a bra. This is better than a chainmail bikini, I guess.

Starfire is 19 - she fled on the day after her eighteenth birthday, the age at which she could be promoted to being a concubine.

Starfire wears bracers that are awfully similar to the Amazons and… by Jove, it all makes sense now !

Personality

Starfire is a fierce, and ferociously independent, warrior. She is a natural leader, big on responsibility, and would rather die than be captured or show mercy toward a Mygorg. Her cause is freedom, and she often evidences a youthful idealism about the value of liberty, in sharp contrast with the craven pragmatism of most humans around her. She certainly talks (and yells) about freedom a lot. Being brave to the point of recklessness, she intensely dislikes cowards - and her definition of the word includes what other would see as reasonable caution and pondering.

While she received an unusual degree of Mygorg education due to her previous status as a favoured slave, Starfire knows very little about her world and the many oddities it contains - and her fierce nature means that, in many cases, her favoured approach toward a problem is to hack it with her sword. She’s not stupid by any mean, but her assets are clearly more courage and passion than analysis and deduction.

Though she definitely has a higher ethical standard than her rag-tag band of lowbrow desperadoes, she is a barbarian warrior with an explosive temper and extremely direct ’tactics’ - though she will not attack unprovoked. Starfire is an impatient woman of action without much time for knowledge that cannot be immediately applied to her war. When fighting she can easily become reckless, and she’s generally not a friend of subtlety. Starfire likes high-risks, high-rewards tactics, thinks short-term and doesn’t mind resorting to frontal assault and blade-wielding violence against even overwhelming odds. It’s a good thing her friend Thump is ably watching her back.

Since her followers symbolise everything she is fiercely fighting for, she tends to be too trusting of them and to easily forgive their various moments of weakness. Even as they keep acting like traitorous, cowardly swine, Starfire will stand by them.

Originally, Starfire was heavily conditioned to be subservient, deferential, somewhat childlike and to please anybody who wasn’t a slave. This programming is now utterly gone - except as the drive behind her aggressiveness and hatred of the occupiers. Since Dagan’s death, she has not shown the least interest in sex or romance - to the point of coming across as being a bit clueless when lewd men are making advances, though it’s difficult to say from the material whether she has the Innocent Drawback or is just sarcastically feigning it.

Raised in an environment devoid of technology, Starfire will always assumes that large machines of a shape she hasn’t seen before are some sort of large animal. She has mental categories for things she has learned about like floaters, but not a “vehicle‘” category that encompasses new sorts of conveyances or robots. Given the demeanour and abilities of some of the monsters on her world - such as giant pterodactyls with eyebeams or giant lizard that breathe ice and cold - it’s not an absurd reflex.

Though she is a woman of action and prone to trash-talking her opponents, Starfire comes up with oddly elaborate and polysyllabic swearing. She’s quite creative when it comes to calling opponents - or anything she doesn’t like really - names.
