Robin v1.1.1

By Ethan Roe

Source of Character: The 1986 mini-series Batman: The Dark Knight Returns

Helper(s): Wikipedia, capita_senyera, Darci, Frank Murdock, William Chamberlain

Reasons (1): Robin would need a lot more Hero Points to pull off what she was able to do but as a starting character I just don’t think she should have them. It’s easier to say Batman was supplying them to her through his Leadership advantage anytime she was working with him or rescuing him. Vehicles is rather speculative. All of Batman’s vehicles may be computer and/or voice controlled.

Reasons (2): Carrie’s height of 4‘2” would be very small for a thirteen year old girl. This may be due to artist’s exaggerating, which causes Batman to look larger and more muscular. The characters may appear to be out of proportion. It could be intended that she be 5‘2” even though she is consistently shown smaller than that. 4‘8” is a good in-between number.

Genre: Action

Writeups.org & Amazon.com recommend Absolute Dark Knight by Frank Miller.

Quotes

Robin

“One-step Street Pizza. Maximum check-out.”

“The dump. I loathe the dump. But it’s the Mutants—and it sounds major. so He might be there…”

Alfred: “She’s a sweet young child.”
Bruce: “She’s more than that.”
Alfred: “Very well, sir. I shall come right out with it. Have you forgotten what happened to Jason ?”
Bruce: “I will never forget Jason. He was a good soldier. He honored me.”
Batman: “But the war goes on.”

Batman: “If you disobey, ever again—you’re fired.”

“Aces.”

“Peel.” (Boosters engage on the Batcopter)

(Bruce is thinking about his age and Robin’s youth) “It’s almost frightening how quickly she’s learning to ride…She has decades — decades, left to her…”

Batman: “Robin ! sit up straight.”
Robin: “Yes,sir.”

Powers and Abilities

Robin is a thirteen year old girl with a lot of courage. Carrie is a girl-scout and is proficient at setting broken bones. In school she has excelled at computers. So much so, that she was able to reprogram Batman’s Batcopter the first time she was in it. She taught herself Acrobatics and is a good shot with a sling-shot.

Robin normally uses her luck advantage at times when it would mean her death if she doesn’t, like a missed jump or a bad fall.

Batman thought enough of her abilities to have her infiltrate the mutant gang on her own. She is the only Robin to ever not learn Martial Arts from Batman.

History

Gotham City has gone to rot ten years after the Batman’s retirement. Crime runs rampant in the streets. The mutants, a dominant street gang rules.

As civil society crumbles around him, Bruce Wayne’s long-suppressed vigilante side finally breaks free of its self-induced shackles.

Lightning cracks overhead, Carrie and her friend Michelle make their way home through the dangerous streets. They are grabbed by some mutants and it could have been their deaths but they are rescued by a less than forgiving Batman.

At home Carrie’s parents, former protesters turned stoners, neglect her but she looks up at a huge Bat-signal in the sky and finds hope.

Carrie bought a Robin outfit with her saved lunch money, then she began training. She learned to travel the rooftops and to be unseen. But what is Robin without Batman, she had to find him. She got lucky when she learned of a big meeting of the Mutants. Something this big could cause Batman to show up.

Robin (Carrie Kelley)

And show he did! Batman arrived in a tank and took the war to the mutants gang. Finally facing their leader in hand-to-hand combat, when Batman began to lose the battle, Carrie, dressed as Robin, intervened. Batman gained enough of an advantage to take out the mutant leader before passing out.

After that, Robin and Batman were partners, again and for the first time.

Robin went undercover and, with Batman’s tutulage, was able to infiltrate the mutants gang and help Batman coordinate another face to face with their Leader. This time Batman wins breaking the mutants up for good.

Next, Batman went after Bruno and her henchmen. Robin disobeyed Batman and fired her slingshot at Bruno. They were interrupted/helped by Superman.

Following a lead, Robin nearly gets herself killed when she disobey’s Batman again. The Building they are in crumbles and Batman decides, knowing who is behind so many deaths, the Joker has to die.

Clark warns Bruce that if he is ordered to bring Batman down, he’ll do it. Superman races off to fight America’s wars.

Robin (Carrie Kelley)

After the Joker was freed from prison, “reformed”. He murdered an entire crowd of people before attacking Selina Kyle and using one of her call-girls for his own purposes and causing the death of a congressman.

The police, now led by newly-appointed Commissioner Ellen Yindel, took a very poor attitude to Batman and his methods and issued a warrant for his arrest. When she saw Batman with a young child leaping in mid-air and barely catching a passing hang-glider, Yindel added child endangerment to the growing list of charges against him.

Having deduced the Joker’s next move with a clue Robin found they arrived at the county fairgrounds a little too late. Joker had already poisoned a scout group. Batman enters killing combat with the Joker but loses his nerve in the final battle. Joker finishes breaking his own neck, so it all gets blamed on Batman.

Superman stops a nuke by diverting it into a nearby desert. However, the electromagnetic pulse had more than normal range and knocks out all the power in Gotham, even Robin’s watch stops. Batman and Robin take to the streets on horseback.

Batman recruits soldiers from the now defunct mutant gang as he goes. During the blackout there are riots and Batman and his army of vigilantes bring it all back under control.

Unnerved by Batman’s activities, the US government sent Superman to bring him down…

Description

Carrie is short for her age. She wears her hair in a popular style for her time. A newsreporter can be seen wearing her hair in much the same style. Carrie seems to keep with the trends of the day when it comes to clothing too. She wears slightly oversized clothing and a high collar on her jacket.

Robin (Carrie Kelley)

When dressed as Robin it’s the traditional Robin outfit, orange vest, green gloves and shoes and a yellow cape. Instead of the traditional mask, Carrie wears large tinted glasses. These glasses appear yellow at times and at others green. There is even one instance when they appear blue.

Personality

Robin is very confident in what she can do. She seems to be able to read Batman and know just how far she can push him without getting herself fired.

Still Carrie seems to be in a state of awe when it comes to Batman. Much like the rest of the youthful population of Gotham, Carrie was seeking “something”. Others found it in emulating the mutant leader, later they also followed Batman.

When other kids dressed as mutants, Carrie became Robin and being Robin became her life.
