Lord Templar v1.0

By Gareth Lewis

Source of Character: Marvel Comics (Avengers vol. 3, various issues between #13-50, written by Kurt Busiek)

Reasons: A few of the Avatars are named (Strength, Agility, Power) but the others I’ve used the most appropriate name (even if they do seem a bit clunky).

Writeups.org & Amazon.com recommend Avengers Assemble, Vol. 4.

Quotes

Lord Templar

“You address me as Lord Templar, in the unlikely event you need to speak to me. But you may depart now, along with those of your foes who remain conscious. As of this moment I am confiscating this structure and all its contents. My crusade is to bring peace and the blessing of universal law to all of Earth — and these armaments will aid in that effort.”

“This is why you so-called ’super-heroes’ have never been effective against the world’s ills — you are an undisciplined rabble, with no respect for authority.”

“I bring you the blessings of peace — and of universal law. A new order — indeed, a true order — for all to benefit from. The Avengers are a threat — champions of chaos, and outmoded individualism. But rest easy my flock, their pernicious influence over you will stand no more !”

The Avatars of Templar

Lord Templar is able to create up to six Avatars which embody particular aspects of excellence. He isn’t limited to creating only one of each type of Avatar, and has called four Avatars of Strength at one point. No limit on how long they may stay separate has been discovered, but don’t appear to have separate consciousnesses, since they don’t communicate and Templar must concentrate to maintain them (implying he’s directing their actions). While they’re manifested, Lord Templar cannot take other actions.

Powers and Abilities

Superhumanly strong and durable, Lord Templar has taken a hit from Mjolnir which only knocked him off his feet (but Thor was probably holding back due to not knowing how tough Templar was). He rarely engages in hand-to-hand combat, though, preferring to hover above the fray and use his other powers, sending blasts of force against opponents, even throwing the Avengers off their feet in one attack (Repulsion).

Lord Templar

He can also create a half dozen (at least, possibly more) Avatars. Roughly approximating his appearance, possessing various powers to degrees he himself hasn’t exhibited. The Avatars appear to be under his direct control, and he can do little else while controlling them.

The Avatar of Agility is fast and agile, often leaping about, and was able to tag Night Thrasher and Speedball; the Avatar of Air flies and projects blasts of air which have kept Thor at bay; the Avatar of Blades has blades where its hands should be; the Avatar of Electricity can shock targets with a touch; the Avatar of Energy can drain the energy of others powers and project it back to them as a blast of energy, and the Avatar of Strength is, unsurprisingly, strong, able to stand up to Wonder Man (briefly, anyway).

History

See the Jonathan Tremont entry for the History.

Personality

Precise and calculating, Lord Templar is arrogant and aloof, issuing commands while floating above the fray, and is indignant at any attempt to engage him in melee.

He claimed to be working towards world peace, but given his true history its unclear exactly how much of his persona is true.
