America Smasher with his brass knuckles

America Smasher

Context

America-Smasher was one of the villains in the first issue of the modestly-titled America’s Greatest Comics. This was published by Fawcett Comics.

Most of these guys would be completely forgotten – they’re not terribly remarkable. But then one day came when writeups.org contributor Sean opened his Archives reprint and took mighty notes…

Powers and Abilities

America Smasher is a dwarf. He has brass knuckles and seems to be a good fighter and operative.

Furthermore, he can rely on a troop of thugs.

History

In America’s Greatest Comics #1, America Smasher refers to a previous meeting between himself and Spy Smasher. He states that Spy Smasher left America Smasher for dead, after a plane crash. This might be a previous appearance, or it might be an instant retcon  to give their battle more meaning. Such things were not uncommon in the Golden Age .

The Spy Smasher story in AGC#1 begins with Spy Smasher noticing a failed attempt on Eve Corby’s life. Spy Smasher tracks the thugs back to their lair in the sewers.

But then a confusing set of events occurs. Spy Smasher slips, making a lot of noise. America Smasher sends some guys to check out the noise, and one of these guys comes back after having shot a rat. Did Spy Smasher run away ? Apparently so.

Later AS sends some men to kidnap “Schultz the butcher” who has a son in the Secret Service. When Schultz won’t cooperate, AS has him put in the iron woman, which merely causes Schultz to faint.

AS then sends men to kidnap Eve Corby. Her father Admiral Corby, though, realizes what has happened. He rushes to the airport where he borrows a plane and skywrites “Spy Smasher – Eve is missing Help !”

Killing Eve (or at least trying to)

Later, Spy Smasher meets up with the Admiral. Spy Smasher realizes that America Smasher must have Eve. Finally, Spy Smasher decides that it might be time to actually fight America Smasher. He arrives just as AS is about to put Eve in the iron woman.

Spy Smasher pushes the iron woman over onto America Smasher, rescues Eve, and holds a gun on AS’s henchmen. SS gives his gun to Eve to cover the henchmen, while he frees Schultz and talks to AS.

America Smasher manages to trick Spy Smasher and escapes, chopping open the flood valve so that everyone will drown. Spy Smasher unties the henchmen, so that they have a chance to live. One goes mad at the thought of drowning. He thus uses some dynamite to blast open the iron door down which America Smasher has escaped.

Spy Smasher manages to save Eve and Schultz. There is no sign of the henchmen, but America Smasher’s unmoving arm can be seen under a pile of rubble. “I don’t think you need worry about him any more,” says Schultz. Is America Smasher really dead this time ?

Well, probably, but not necessarily.

Quotes

“Relax my little prize package, it will do no good to squirm. You and I are going for a little trip to visit the iron woman !”

Description

He is a fat German dwarf, wearing a German military uniform with various medals as well as a monocle.

DC Universe History

In the post-Crisis Universe, America Smasher is the sort of WWII villain who would have been unlikely to outlast the war. Crisis certainly wouldn’t have changed his battles against Spy Smasher.
