Charlie-27 of the Guardians of the Galaxy (Marvel Comics) in the yellow vacuum suit

Charlie-27 is one of Marvel’s original Guardians of the Galaxy. These are the ones who first saw publication in 1969, and operate in a possible future of the Marvel Universe – specifically the XXXIst century.

For more context about this version of the Guardians and their setting, see our original Guardians of the Galaxy team profile.

  • Real Name: Charlie-27.
  • Other Aliases: Captain-27.
  • Marital Status: Single.
  • Known Relatives: Charlie-26 (father, deceased), Mabel-17 (mother, deceased).
  • Group Affiliation: Guardians of the Galaxy; formerly Jovian Military.
  • Base Of Operations: Mobile.
  • Height: 6’8” Weight: 555 lbs.
  • Eyes: Blue Hair: Brown
  • Note: The original OHOTMU has his height listed as 6’0”, but his later appearances show him as being much larger. My No-Prize Hypothesis  is that it’s the result of his body adapting to living in a lighter gravity than it was designed for. I’ve reduced the height a bit from my original estimate, anyway.

Powers & Abilities

Born on the heavy-gravity Jovian colony, Charlie-27 has a denser structure than normal humans. He has eleven times the muscle mass, and a wider frame. This leaves him far tougher and stronger, able to lift around 5 tons.

He has had intensive military training, giving him a strong tactical sense and familiarity with weapons, and he is a highly trained pilot.

(See the Guardians of the Galaxy (31st century) profile for a complete history of the team.)

Guardians of the Galaxy

Born on the Jovian colony in the late 30th Century, Charlie-27 enlisted in the space militia at 16. He was a captain when the Badoon invaded. Returning from solo duty to find his home overrun by Badoon, and the rest of his people dead, he used a teleport tube to escape to Pluto for help.

The earliest, original Guardians of the Galaxy

Discovering Pluto in a similar state, he met up with fellow survivor, Martinex. They destroyed Pluto’s industrial complexes then took teleport tubes to Earth. Meeting up with Yondu and Vance Astro when they arrived on Earth, they formed the Guardians of the Galaxy, fighting against the occupying Badoon.

When they rescued the young Mercurian, Nikki, she and Charlie soon developed a romantic relationship. However, it became more platonic as the years went on. He later developed a mutual attraction with Force member, Broadside, but this never went anywhere.

Guilt and Punishment

When Yondu discovered some of his people still lived, he left the team, and gave Charlie his knife. The knife was lost when Charlie’s plan to stop the Badoon from ever invading Earth failed. Its presence caused problems for Centauri IV later.

Charlie 27 and the rest of the Guardians of the Galaxy original lineup

When the team were ambushed by Rancor’s mutants, Charlie was dumped on an abandoned planet. There the authorities arrested him as the serial killer Ripjak, based on evidence provided by Rancor.

With little pretence of a fair trial, Charlie was thrown in Stockade. Arriving to find a number of his old enemies there, he shared a cell with the immortal, and by now hopelessly insane alchemist, Diablo. He survived long enough for the Guardians to break him out, gaining evidence to exonerate him soon after from the mutant Sidestep, who was secretly acting against Rancor.

They then set out to find the real Ripjak.

Investigating rumours of a surviving colony of Jovians, Charlie and Nikki resumed their romantic relationship. Soon afterwards Charlie was elected leader of the Guardians. As his first command led them back to try changing history again, this time stopping the Martian invasion before it ever happened.

They succeeded, in that reality at least, but were stranded on their way home.

Initially strict and formal, Charlie treated the others like soldiers. Thus, he often barked orders and got irritated when they didn’t act in a military manner. He changed over time to be more accepting of them. But he still offers strategic advice, and they frequently defer to his leadership in combat.

While not overly aggressive, his training and experiences have left him likely to attack first in dangerous situations. But he’s usually clear-headed enough to only do so when it’s called for.
