Dart of the Atari Force (DC Comics)

Dart

(Erin Bia Singh O'Rourke)

Context

There were two Atari Force comics series during the 1980s. Dart was in the second, larger 1984/85 run. As can be imagined it was a #brand thing for the Atari video games company . But still, the series was by Gerry Conway and José Luis García-López.

By that point Atari had just begun its interminable slide into irrelevance – the Great Video Games Crash was in 1983. But the comics were fine, if not good with the metric system.

This profile is best read after the Tempest article.

I see danger ahead

Dart has telepathic abilities – she can mentally communicate with her foster brother Christopher if she concentrates. But the bulk of her psionic strength lies in precognition.

Dart has the uncanny ability to predict possible future events. In most cases her predictions are involuntary. She will see catastrophes less than a minute before they happen – though of course that is still invaluable information. Her premonitions enable her to attempt to alter the outcome of such occurrences if she reacts immediately.

She refers to these clear, quick glimpses as the visions “taking over”. Her eyes turn light green while she has visions.

Future visions

She will also, occasionally, get glimpses of the future of more distant times. These are fully controlled by the GM, reach further than her power ordinarily would, and are seldom clear as to their meaning.

With great concentration she can focus her power and consciously look for future events. In DC Heroes RPG terms this means paying a Marginal power fee.

The visions are always active at low level. Erin has an instinct for probabilities allowing her to avoid incoming attacks with superhuman acumen. In DC Heroes RPG terms, that contributes to her high DEX and Acrobatics skill. Having practiced this ability, and continuing to do so, has made her a combatant to be reckoned with.

History

(See the Tempest writeup for the basic Atari Force history.)

Erin Bia was born on 01/02/2007 New Earth, daughter to original Atari Force members Li-San O’rourke and Mohandas Singh. Although life on New Earth was peaceful, her mother taught her unarmed combat.

At age 16 Dart enlisted with the military academy of New Earth. Standing up to her principles, she soon got into trouble at the academy. ATARI security sent an agent after her – but this man, Hunter, turned out to be an old friend of her parents.

This is how Erin Bia and her friend Dalia, were able to escape unjust arrest and reach planet Sangfroid-7, halfway across the universe. They were to meet up with a man named Drago.

The Brotherhood

The girls joined the Brotherhood, a mercenary order dedicated to perfection of the body and soul. Their training regimen made the harshest of the old academy’s trials seem as child’s play to the two former cadets. Combat of every style was drilled into them by day. Strategy and planning for every conceivable terrain and contingency was taught them by night.

Once the gruelling, exhausting regimen of knowledge and physical perfection had become second nature to them, they were deployed in the field.

They became among the best in their fields and they were part of a fine and noble fighting force. They fought on the side of right, destroying the tyrannical and despotic and liberating the oppressed.

Betrayed

Then came the time when they were sent on a special mission to the planet Kolb, where a revolution was going on. The order had been hired to fight in a revolution. There Erin Bia had a strong vision about her and the man she would later know as BlackJak.

Dalia was killed during a surprise attack. Erin Bia attacked a man that she thought was Dalia’s killer, damaging his eye.

Realizing her mistake she offered him her medical help. The man, named Moses Fisk, had been hired by Drago, the Brotherhood’s headmaster, to fight on the opposing side. Feeling deeply betrayed, Erin Bia joined up with Moses, called BlackJack by friends, to gain vengeance for Drago’s betrayal.

Confronting Drago, she found out that he expected a lot of cash and no surviving troopers. Drago overpowered Erin, but after BlackJack came in to help they defeated him.

The pair soon left the planet, became lovers and continued mercenary work around the galaxy.

Description

Dart is a young woman with dark grey eyes, beautiful features, grey-brown skin color and long, white hair kept in a ponytail. She is in excellent physical shape. She has several unusual tattoos, and the most distinguished are the half-circular ones in her face and the dagger- and staff-like on her arms.

She wears a red, stylistic and rich-in-details costume, covering everything except her head and arms, and with militaristic paraphelia of several types. She usually carries a lot of weapons in holsters around a yellow belt, on the back or along the legs.

The mercenary look is completed by a pair of blue shoulderpads with star insignia. At the same time she wears ear-rings, bracelets and a necklace. Her body language reveals her high self-confidence, courage and combat readiness.

Personality

Dart is intensely loyal, intelligent and controlled. Being able to see potential futures has reinforced her self-reliant personality. Despite her young age, Years of mercenary work have toughened her and made her focused, disciplined, courageous and capable. For recreation she maintains a hard physical regimen. Although controlled, she is also eager to get started.

Her independence, experience and self-confidence makes her into a natural leader. She is also an excellent teammate to whomever she pairs up with and seems capable of using their strengths to their fullest and complementing their weaknesses herself.

She expects to complete missions and she generally does. She has little hesitation in gunning down opponents and is protective of her teammates.

Culturally, she is from a mixed heritage of Irish, Chinese and Hindi. Her choice of food is Indian. Strength in various forms impresses her. She is occasionally inflexible and has some problems vocalizing her feelings.

Her parents offer her a welcome retreat from mercenary activities, as does her little foster brother, Christopher Champion. She is deeply in love with fellow merc and lover, BlackJak, and like is so common in such circumstances, she is blind to his faults.
