Batman Beyond was a 1999-2001 animated series set in the future of the DC animated universe. Though Bruce Wayne is now a man of a certain age, he lets a new Batman arise in future Gotham. One of his recurrent opponents is a street crew called the Jokerz.

The Dee Dee Twins are definitely the most competent and most interesting, original characters of all the Jokerz. Besides that, cute twins with mad acrobatic martial arts skills can make a welcome edition to any gallery of villains regardless of the campaign that you want to play.

They are also the only characters in the entire series with any sort of legitimate claim to the heritage of the Joker (even though they are likely unaware of it.) This could make for all sorts of interesting subplots.

Powers and Abilities

The Dee Dee twins are direct descendants from Harley Quinn (and quite possibly the Joker as well) and have inherited much of her acrobatic martial arts abilities.

They fight in a fairly straightforward manner. However they tend to use much better tactics than the rest of the Jokerz and frequently employ team attacks, blind sides, etc.. They once even used their skills as actresses to make Batman (Terry McGinnis) think they weren’t a threat just to get him to turn his back so that they could blind side him.


They are way more effective in hand-to-hand combat than any of the other Jokerz. The twins fare a lot better when confronting Batman than all the other Jokerz by far. They are likely about the only Jokerz who could actually be considered a legitimate threat to Batman without ridiculously outnumbering him.

That said other than the above mentioned skills they don’t really have anything else going for them. They’re just punk gang members to get into a lot of trouble and are generally able to fight their way out of it.

The Jokers have no connection to the criminal master mind The Joker who terrorized Gotham City in an era gone by. The one exception is the Dee Dee twins who don’t seem to be aware just how close to the original they are. It seems highly likely that they merely grew out of the mythos that the original laughing man had created.

That said they are just a bunch of misfit teenagers with a psychotic clown theme who terrorize normal citizens with mostly petty street crimes.

The Dee Dee twins were some of the few members to be recognized as elite because of their superior acrobatic martial arts fighting skills. Those were likely inherited from their grandmother Harley Quinn.

When the original Joker came back to haunt Gotham City decades after his alleged death he saw these foolish and impressionable thugs as easy recruits. He then sent them to steal the technology he needed to put it in his terms “once again give this town a wedgy.”

Hounded by a bat

The thefts proceeded smoothly at first. That lasted until the new Batman got wise to what was going on and began interfering with their plans. When the Jokers showed up to steal more technology Batman was waiting for them. After a brief scuffle the Jokers attempted to make their getaway with the stolen goods.

Batman pursued them and after goading Bonk into taking some rash actions and Dee Dee’s twin sister falling off the levi lift.

Later on, they joined the Joker. Most of the rest of the gang were distracting both the Batmen of new and old so that Ghoul and Chucko were able to make off with the tech they needed to complete the Joker’s ultimate weapon.

After that the Joker sent them to help help silence Price, who had been the Jokerz silent accomplice in the previous heist. But Batman showed up at the last moment and saved Price before turning him over to the police.

Later confrontations

A lot happened after that, but when it came down to the final showdown with Batman the Dee Dee twins were the last to confront him and were the only members who were KOed inside the first few rounds. However this time Batman came prepared for them and using clever tactics he was able to defeat both of them and confront the Joker.

In an alternate future the Dee Dee twins were shown to be among Chronos’s thugs. They were using a futuristic electric bullwhip and had gained the ability to split into several different Dee Dees making them far more lethal and effective than ever.

Out of all of Chronos’s henchmen seen in the future they, once again, seemed the most effective of the bunch.


The twins dress in white booty shorts with red tank tops and red go-go boots. They also wear white newsboy hats and complete the outfit with classic clown make up. They seemed to be normal petite women with a sort of gymnasts’ build. Out of costume they have long flowing blond hair and are quite attractive.


The twins obviously came from a poor family and likely joined the Jokerz mainly for the thrills and escapism that they would provide. Out of all the Jokerz they seem to be the most playful and talkative.

They also seem to be the ones that “get into” the crimes and pranks that the other Jokerz pull. That’s saying something considering how most of the other Jokerz are a bunch of slobbering lunatics.

Another notable thing about them is that both twins don’t seem to be seeking any sort of separate identity at all. It is thoroughly impossible to tell, at any given time, which is which. They commonly have conversations with one another and always address the other twin as Dee Dee.

Even their teammates don’t seem to differentiate at all and generally tend to treat the two of them as a collective single entity.


Dee Dee 1: “He’s really got a delicate touch, Dee Dee.”
Dee Dee 2: “Delicate like a moose, Dee Dee.”

Dee Dee 1: “Well, if it isn’t Mr. Wayne.”
Dee Dee 2: “So debonair.”
Dee Dee 1: “So dapper.”
Dee Dee 2 (knees Wayne in the gut)
Dee Dee 1 (kicks him, sending him sprawling): “So decrepit.”

Chucko: Word is Wayne’s terminal anyway.”
Dee Dee 1: “That means you get to stay top dog.”
Dee Dee 2: “And everyone’s happy.”

DC Universe History

The Joker’s could be dropped whole cloth into modern Gotham, obviously as Bat foes. The Joker, like most criminal masterminds, has been known to employ henchmen to assist him with his exploits, why not just use the Joker’s as a set to keep with his whole clown motif?

Furthermore it is likely that they are in fact direct descendants from the original Joker and most certainly Harley Quinn. To make things more interesting cut the generational gap out and make them the children of The Joker and Harley Quinn. That in and of itself could make for loads of subplots.

For a touch of irony they could be pitted against Tim Drake or one of the other costumed crime fighters who’s taken on the Robin mantle. They are after all the heirs to certain rival legacies and kind of integral to one another.
