Diamond Lil (Alpha Flight) (Marvel Comics) in black leather

Diamond Lil

Lil appeared with the original Alpha Flight volume, in 1983. For years she was but a stock member of an enemy team, but over 1989/91 she became a significant, more developed character. She hasn’t been seen much since, though.

These are older notes. They’ll eventually be redone, when/if the post-Byrne Alpha Flight vol. 1 issues get a digital reissue.

  • Real Name: Lilian Crawley.
  • Marital Status: Divorced.
  • Known Relatives: Unnamed ex-husband.
  • Group Affiliation: Alpha Flight reserve ; former member of Gamma Flight I and Omega Flight I.
  • Base Of Operations: Canada.
  • Height: 6’4” Weight: 165 lbs.
  • Eyes: Hazel Hair: Brown, sometimes reddish brown.

Powers and Abilities

Diamond Lil’s skin is diamond-hard. Thus, she’s nearly invulnerable to physical and energy attacks. Very few things short of Wolverine’s Adamantium  claws can cut her skin, and she was usually defeated by mystical or mental attacks.

She can inflict more damage that one would expect by using her diamond-hard knuckles, her nails, or her hair used as garrotes.

Diamond Lil first appeared as a Gamma Flight trainee. After it disbanded she defected from the Canadian government’s metahuman training team. Lil joined the first super-villain team in Canada, the original Omega Flight. This was the group responsible for the death of James Hudson, the original Guardian.

She was still with Omega when they tried to destroy Alpha Flight. It was later revealed that they did so were under the influence of a shady character called the, well, Influencer. He had manipulated their emotions.

After she was released from prison, Crawley attempted to renew her relationship with Madison Jeffries. Eventually, she joined the new Gamma Flight, a government controlled team to counter Alpha Flight. Alpha was at that point operating as an independent hero team, without governmental ties. Lil didn’t stay long, tagging along with Alpha Flight instead.

Last stretch of service

Lil formally reinforced the Flight for a tough battles against Llan, the Peace Corpse, the Master and the Consortium.

That last battle was critical for her. Crawley had been diagnosed with a possible breast cancer. But nothing could cut her skin in order to examine the possible tumour. However, during the fight, she came across an alien. He was armed with a cybernetic gun that could actually cut her skin.

She easily defeated him, but learned the gun couldn’t be removed from the alien without causing irreparable physical and mental damage. Lil nevertheless elected to rip the gun free of the alien. The tumour was later diagnosed as benign after exams could be run.

Lil soon turned to inactive status to spend some time with her husband, fellow Alphan Madison Jeffries (a.k.a. Box).

Lil is athletic, and unusually tall.

The black leather costume was the last one she wore as part of Alpha ; below is the more garish outfit she had as a Gamma and Omega Flight member.

“Creepy” Crawley was once bitter and aggressive. Those feelings were backed by a great amount of trust in her near-indestructibility. She rarely felt bound by morality.

Her time with Alpha Flight and her relationship with Madison Jeffries made her feel a little better and respected. However, life could very quickly make her bitter again. She’s certainly no heroine, though she’s not into pointless depredations either.

“Pretty gutsy move — Makin’ fun of a gal whose arms are wrapped so close to the family jewels, Juddsie.”

“Get back here, ya scrungy little alien dork !”

DC Universe History

Diamond Lil is a minor character. She could simply appear as a random Genebomb victim from Canada or Canadian government operative.

If the PCs do not have a way to stop or restrain her, she can make for one unnerving opponent.
