History

Dr. Ecks was a brilliant but naïve scientist. His theories were scorned by his peers. Yet he was able to build a machine that could isolate parts of an individual’s personality and give them a physical form.

However his energy-duplicate, Dr. Double X, was the avatar of all of his evil, negative emotions. The strong-willed Double X turned to a life of crime in order to finance his alter ego’s experiments. The wimpy Dr. Ecks reluctantly went along.

But this ultimate “odd couple” met their match when they crossed paths with Batman and Robin. The Dynamic Duo tracked the two to their lair, and destroyed the machine that gave Double X life. Unable to recall what happened, Dr. X was sent to a sanitarium for treatment.

Description

Dr. Double X is a pale, ghostly figure surrounded by an eerie glow. He wears a yellow tunic with an “XX” symbol on the chest, red trunks, a blue belt, yellow lace-up sandals, and a red cloak and hood with a serrated fin on top. His legs are bare.

He has black hair and an upswept handlebar moustache.

Dr. Ecks is identical in appearance, except that he lacks the unearthly glow and only has a single “X” on his chest.

Personality

Dr. X is quiet and timid, well-meaning but easily manipulated.

Double X is his exact opposite: forceful, arrogant, and sadistic. He will do anything to ensure his continued existence and his alter ego’s safety, up to and including murder. Dr. X sometimes tries to curb his double’s nastier tendencies, but usually will go along with whatever Double X has in mind.

In later appearances, Dr. X is more self-assured and actively evil, an equal partner in crime to Double X. I prefer the Jekyll – Hyde pathos of the original version, so that’s how I wrote it up.
