Context

GURPS Time Travel Adventures was a late 1990s RPG supplement, with three, well, time travel adventures in it. Our contributor David thought that a few characters therein were interesting to import to a super-hero world.

These operate on a parallel Earth where magic works. This timeline  is described in GURPS Technomancer.

  • Known Relatives: None.

Powers and Abilities

Chavez has no powers, but is a trained ex-soldier.

He also has a Walkmage, a technomagical device that allows him to play enchanted tapes giving him alternately the ability:

  • To make bullets miss.
  • To put targets in a trance.
  • To compel them to be truthful.
  • To throw balls of fire.

History

Chavez grew up poor and hungry. He joined the military as soon as he graduated. They sent him to fight in his worlds version of the Việt Nam war, where he found a slot for himself as a supply sergeant and black marketeer.

There he met Captain Andrew Bleys. Bleys was part of a secret and rather unsavoury project to try to use magic as a combat weapon. He became invaluable to Bleys, providing him with all kinds of exotic spell ingredients up to and including virgins.

After the war, Chavez took the nest egg he’d built up, and became a major drug dealer. But the wartime connection with Bleys became a close civilian association when Bleys found himself in need of people who would not be missed.

Chavez sent Bleys over 500 undocumented immigrants, who vanished never to be heard from since. In return Chavez got his Walkmages, his prototype Mana Disruptor, his undead bodyguards and labourers, and best of all, his own personal succubus, “Carmen Cazotte”.

Description

A average sized man in good shape, with a distinctive handlebar moustache and an Armani suit.

Personality

A smooth and sociopathic egotist. He’s calculating, greedy and lecherous.

Quotes

“That is a very interesting sidearm. Who manufactured it ?”

“Let’s not make a personal vendetta out of an ill-considered business decision.”

“Kill them.”

DC Universe History

Chavez can fill the exact same slot in the DC Universe that he does in his own universe. Who’d notice or try to stop a magic using mobster in Albuquerque ?
