Fuji of StormWatch

Fuji was one of the early Image Comics characters, appearing in 1993. He was also one of the more workable ones and with some good visual design, so he endured better than some of his contemporaries.

He is an agent of StormWatch, an international agency. If you’re not familiar with it, it might be better to read the StormWatch organisation profile first.

  • Real Name: Toshiro Misawa.
  • Marital Status: Single.

  • Group Affiliation: StormWatch Prime.
  • Base Of Operations: SkyWatch II.
  • Height: 8’2” Weight: 441 lbs. Age: 34

Powers and Abilities

Fuji is a being of immense size and strength. His unstable molecular state is only controlled by his specially made costume. Within the protective shrouding of his containment suit, he is able to control his own density.

Without it, he would revert to a gaseous plasma state containing high levels of radioactive energy. These would be lethal to anyone around him. Then, he would eventually die from dispersion. He is what the scientists call a gaseous sentient posthuman entity.

Fuji is a seedling (mutant). His powers first manifested as an anomalous size for his age. Using his nearly superhuman size as best as he could, Toshiro became a sumotori  as a young teenager.

Despite the honours brought by a successful sumo career, Toshiro’s father wanted to cure his son of this “illness” of his. The elder Misawa being a brilliant businessman leading a powerful family well represented in electronics, manufacture and maritime transport, the research for a cure was efficient.

It was quickly discovered that Toshiro was a seedling, and thus couldn’t be cured.

An offer from StormWatch

StormWatch, the UN’s supernatural crisis response organisation, offered to fully activate Fuji’s powers, since he couldn’t be cured, in return for him joining their organisation. The Misawas agreed, but it went wrong. When he was activated by Synergy, Fuji went unstable and began to explode in a cloud of radioactive plasma.

Some quick work from the tech saved his life. From Toshiro learned to use an armoured containment suit as an exoskeleton, allowing him to interact almost normally with his environment.

In the Wildstorm universe, the UN is secretly a menacing worldwide conspiracy led by gun-toting, paranoid “Secret Masters”. While they are heroes, the operatives of StormWatch are quite ruthless and do not hesitate to violate the rights of a country in order to advance the agenda of the UN.

Fuji has been an operative for StormWatch for years now. He was a member of StormWatch One, the UN’s second super-team. The first was the original StormWatch Prime (Backlash, Battalion, Flashpoint, Nautika, Sunburst), but it disbanded after the Gulf war or 1991.

For a short period, he helped the WildCATs II team, led by Savant, deal with the Crime War they had started in New York. His final confrontation with Tao left Fuji temporarily catatonic. Apparently, these troubles worn off after proper medical treatment.

After Henry Bendix resumed his Weatherman function, Fuji fitted in the new organisation as a member of the new StormWatch Prime, the team devoted to dealing with superhuman threats in hot war situations, along with Hellstrike and Winter.

Fuji wears a massive, somewhat anthropoid (broad shoulders, long arms, short legs) armored suit. It is painted in various shades of metal and black. There are two *huge* elongated spiked shields on his forearms. His “head” is comparatively very small.

He doesn’t have a nose or a mouth. Just a white, almost featureless face with the Japanese flag red circle on it.

Fuji has a vocoder inside the suit, giving him a synthetic, metallic voice. His body now only has three fingers on each hand and his feet are just elephant-like stomps.

Previously, Misawa Toshiro was characterized as diligent, young, respectful and somewhat clumsy.

But Fuji has grown up a lot these days. He is, after all, a champion sumotori (ozeki rank ). Fuji is a serious man, with a high regard for honour and the consequence and meaning of actions. He’s articulate and cultured, and very much an adult, though he relies on a particular humour to hide his concern for his comrades.

Fuji is a team player, but occasionally speaks his mind. One instance when the team was up against a Japanese mad scientist. Fuji wanted to take him out himself, since he was embarrassed to have this fellow reflecting badly on Japan.

“There’s no honour in humbling an outmatched opponent. But there is great humour.”

DC Universe History

An interesting possibility would be that the Guardians only existed in the 70’s. In this take StormWatch is a newer incarnation of that team, replacing the JLI as the UN-sponsored team.
