Ghost (Strikeforce Morituri) in action

Ghost

(Tam Van Ok)

Context

Strikeforce Morituri was an intriguing 1986-1989 Marvel series, taking place in its own universe. It was a military sci-fi saga, centred on superhuman soldiers fighting to repel alien invaders who very nearly crushed Earth.

The main twist was that the treatment giving powers to volunteers was invariably fatal, leaving little life expectancy to the super-soldiers. Hence the name, derived from the famous Latin phrase morituri te salutant  (“those about to die salute you”).

Powers and Abilities

In addition to the normal Morituri physical enhancements, the Ghost was invisible to all senses.

He was also one of the deadliest assassins alive. Even before he underwent the Process, his agility and skill were almost superhuman. Afterwards, combined with his invisibility power, he was almost unstoppable.

Only Scanner’s ability to see him prevented the Ghost from murdering the entire Strikeforce.

History

Tam Van Ok was a Cambodian assassin, possibly the best who ever lived. He joined the conspiracy for the power they offered and was perfectly happy to follow their orders.

His first mission was to assassinate Dr. Tuolema. But while waiting for the right moment to strike, he learned that the conspiracy had lied to him about the cure for the Morituri Effect. Unsure how to proceed, he allowed Tuolema to live.

His next job was to kill the Strikeforce. He almost took out Burn and Lifter before they even knew he was there, but Scanner was able to see the Ghost and kept him from succeeding. When he failed, the conspiracy sent the army to try to kill the Strikeforce.

Ghost, incensed as this interference, abandoned the conspiracy’s plans and set out to take his revenge on them.

He killed one, but the Strikeforce captured the other leaders. Once the coup had failed, Ghost left, never to be seen or heard from again.

Description

A slim, medium-built Asian man, Ghost had shoulder-length hair and wore a black body suit with a yellow stripe across his chest and yellow belt.

Personality

Ghost was the perfect assassin, level-headed, unemotional, deadly. He would have followed the conspiracy’s plan to the letter if they had not lied to him. For him, it was always simply a job, never personal.

Quotes

“As usual, I am beyond my foes. They are nothing to me. They are easy.”

DC Universe History

As written, the Morituri were in their own stand-alone universe. However, the idea of the Morituri process works in any universe. Perhaps a new, more determined alien invasion attacks and earth’s normal superheroes are outmatched. STAR Labs or Lexcorp could develop this process to help turn the tide.
