Gorgon using his eyebeams over a white background

(Adonis Bal)

Power Level:
Game system: DC Heroes Role-Playing Game

*This* Gorgon is part of a team called the Hybrid. Thus, you should first read our Pteradon character profile, which is where the context about the Hybrid is summarised.

The Hybrid are interesting – they managed to be at once reminiscent of the Doom Patrol, the classic Teen Titans and some classic versions of the X-Men. In fact they were even slated at one point for a series of their own, though that apparently fell afoul of an IP issue.

  • Real Name: Andonis Bal.
  • Marital Status: Married.
  • Known Relatives: Angelika (aka Harpi, wife).
  • Group Affiliation: Hybrid.
  • Base Of Operations: Dayton Industries properties throughout the world ; later Mobile.
  • Height: 6’ Weight: 185 lbs.
  • Eyes: Glowing red (sometimes solid black). Hair: Serpentine.

Powers and Abilities

Like most Hybrid members, Gorgon has a low level of superhuman strength and durability, as well as considerable fighting skill and alacrity.

His main power is he ability to shoot pale red beams from the eyes of the serpents on his head. Though they look similar to his wife’s eyebeams, their effect is quite different. They turn people into solid stone. This transmutation usually lasts for about four hours (12 RAPs).

Other assets

I’ve assumed the Bals knew some languages common among archaeologists specialising in ancient Greece.

Some sources describe Andonis Bal as being blind, but able to see through the eyes of his snakelike tresses. This is not really a Physical Restriction, and some GMs may wish to give him some Full Vision (though he has not demonstrated this Power in published material AFAICT).

See the Pteradon writeup.

Gorgon of the Hybrid shooting eye beams (DC Comics)

The four initial Hybrid members had a first look (illustrated at the bottom of the column), but later changed to a more modern look.

Harpi and Gorgon face Mento

The Bals are a loving couple who stumbled into a nightmare. Initially, their passion was archaeology.

They were hoping for a big find. In this way, they would no longer have to belly dance in front of corporations for funding. They were so annoyed by the financing aspect of their job that they seemed to verge on tomb robbery. Selling that huge ruby they had found so that they would be set for life was perhaps more important to them than its archaeological value.

As Hybrid operatives, they stick with each other in face of an insane taskmaster. They’ll sometimes try to rebel a bit, and often plead Mento not to kill anyone. If the stakes are too high, they may try to resist in a somewhat passive manner. However, they will definitely defend themselves if attacked.

The Bals are trying to keep their dignity, and not to get any blood on their hands.

Hybrid group shot (DC Comics)

As time go by they recover their courage. Yet they are still aware that they cannot do anything against Mento. Pteradon is their ally in their attempts at resistance against Mento, and is often the one taking the initiative.

However, the Bals also got used to the idea of fighting for Mento. Or perhaps their conditioning was strengthened. Thus, they became increasingly aggressive and hard-nosed in the field.

This is especially true of Harpi, who was growing increasingly bitter about it all. Gorgon was still level-headed and would often plead with his opponents so they would find a way to free the Hybrid from Mento’s reign of terror.

“Damn you, Dayton — I’ll see you dead for what you’ve done.”

“Leave him alone, Mento. There’s no reason for this torture. You’ve hurt us, changed us into these… grotesqueries. Must you harm them, too ?”

“I’m no happier about this than you are, Scirocco — but as long as we are under Mento’s mental domination, we have no choice !”
