Powers and Abilities

Ivar is a strange attractor. That is, he attracts time warps. He uses these to enter new adventures in new time eras around the world.

He is immortal, or so it is believed. This might be linked to him getting completely healed up whenever he travels in time. Furthermore, he’s naturally able to detect time arcs. He has slight super-human strength and increased healing abilities.

He is tough enough to take only some damage from small guns. But he can be cut down rather easily by a well-placed duelist’s bullet, machine gun fire, artillery fire and the like.

During his adventures he has learnt a great number of useful skills for an adventurer. For example, he was taught to fly by the Wright brothers, taught swordsmanship by D’artagnan, Cyrano, Scaramouche and Errol Flynn and taught to fight by Jack Dempsey. Further experience has made him the greatest swordsman of all time.

From literature and movies he has learnt tough guy lingo, which he uses when playing a role or expected to do so. Perhaps his greatest abilities, though, seem to be his excellent people skills.

Additional context

Computer of time

Ivar’s Interactive Navigational Computer is a piece of alien technology tuned up by his friend Mac.

It functions like a tachyon compass. It tells the user where in the world and when during the next couple of months the next time arc will appear, and so Ivar can reach in time and use it to navigate through time. This way he:

  • Doesn’t miss any time warps appearing.
  • Doesn’t have to wait for up to months to attract a time warp himself.
  • Can get moving to a new time in a relatively short time period.

However, in much earlier times transportation technology might be too slow to get him to an appearing time warp in time. Meaning he has to try to catch the next one coming up instead.

This technology thus allows controlled time travel. While time warps usually lead to random time eras, with this computer he only needs to reach the location of the time warp and write the year and place he wants to go onto the compass before entering the appearing warp. Then he actually arrives in the specified era.

However, the method is not perfect. It occasionally fails to take him to where he wishes to be. For example:

  • Entering a sun sign along 1423 B.C. once transported him to a movie set in Hollywood where Cecil B. DeMille’s film about Egypt was being produced, in 1923 A.D..
  • Another time entering an apple, the compass took him to 1939 to partake in a popular dance called the Big Apple.
  • Entering New York 1998 once got him to York, England in 1498.

Treat these as failures of the device ’s R# rolls. This only produces an error in reached destination, not that the computer is broken down in any way.

This equipment was broken for a while after having been damaged until Mac repaired it around the year 2000. Meanwhile Ivar had to use his earpiece to navigate poorly and jump to random time eras.

Throughout the ages

Due to his nature of his adventures, time-travel, Ivar has equipment, reputations, etc. in different time eras. He has a couple of safe houses set up in different locations and times. There is, for example, a safehouse in Woodstock, N.Y. established in 1814, which he kept for a couple of hundred years. There is also a message boot in Edison, New Jersey, at least between 1980 to 2033.

He can use many a language programmed into his universal translator on his journeys. He also carries on his person an assorted mix of money for most important eras and empires, including reichmarks, royal sovereigns, buffalo nickels & dollars. The following also apply to his various aliases:

  • Dura-Europos (1st century to 206 AD): Ivar has the Local Hero Advantage with the population who think that he is a god.
  • Vienna, Austria (18th century): Ivar has a High Level Connection with Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.
  • Sevastopol, the Crimea (around 1854): Major Ivar has Credentials (British Troops, Low) during the Crimean War.
  • Antarctica (around 1911): Ivar has a Connection to Roald Amundsen, the explorer.
  • Nazi Germany (around 1944): Ivar, as Captain Ivarstadt, had Credentials (The Wehrmacht, Med), during his time as a war spy.
  • Los Angeles, USA (in 2056-2063): Ivar has a High Level Connection to the Resistance Leader Lucinda Mendez in Los Angeles. He also has High Level Connections to Faith Herbert, the leader of Archies’ Peace Movement, another Resistance Group, and Phase, the Harbinger. This era marks the beginning of the Harbinger Wars.
  • Las Vegas, USA (around 2443): Ivar has a Connection to Psycho, a field leader of the H.A.R.D. Corps.
  • Los Angeles, USA (around 2990): Ivar has a Connection to Peter Stanchek, a vastly powerful hero and resistance fighter. This year the Harbinger Wars finally end.
  • In addition to these, Ivar seems to know people in almost every time era he visits (Omni-Connection, in DC Heroes RPG terms).

History

For an excellent biography of Ivar, see The Book of Geomancer site.

Description

Ivar is a handsome man usually clad in clothing appropriate to the time he currently resides in. In more modern times he seems fond of wearing trenchcoats along trendy adventurer clothing.

From his features people usually pinpoint him as a Turk. Women in all time eras comment on his good looks..

Personality

Ivar Anni-Padda, the immortal Timewalker, wanders through the centuries fighting the good fight while he tries to return to his ancient Egyptian lover lost in another time, Queen Nefertiti. He is a devil-may-care rogue and lightning rod for action and adventure.

While Egypt is him main goal he isn’t particularly worried about reaching it immediately. Time is literarily on his side. Time traveling itself doesn’t bother Ivar much, who just sees it as another exciting adventure about to start.

He has traveled in time a lot and sometimes meets people who apparently have met him before and finds historical records of his own activities that he has not yet experienced. This doesn’t usually bother him much either, although it does when some of these people are enemies and he doesn’t know why that is.

He speaks quite openly to people about him being a time-traveler expecting them not really to believe him anyway.

Other traits

Ivar was a sensitive child and grown into a compassionate and caring man. He has a good heart and helps people wherever he can. He will avoid killing if he can and merely leave opponents unconscious. He is very bothered by men attacking and bullying women, and will thus always intervene.

He also generally dislikes all types of bullies and thugs. He will, in fact, scrap his plans if people are in immediate need of help and assist them instead. He has a funny habit of offering people in all time eras some chewing gum.

He has some very good friends in different times. His ancestor Mack Weisenfeld in the 1980s to 2000 New York regularly helps him out with technology and other matters. Mack, being his relative, is also one of few men capable of traveling through the time arcs with no ill effects whatsoever.

He is somewhat obsessed about reaching the time of his old lover, Nefertiti in ancient Egypt. Women are always after him wherever he goes, and he often befriends them and if he has time, it he will enjoy it too. He sometimes meets his younger, immortal brothers Aram and Gilad during his various time trips upon which they complete an adventure together.

Quotes

“Don’t play riddles with me, lady —- I used to hustle the Sphinx for pocket change ! I’ve done everything in my power to stop this slaughter — and you come along and escalate it !”

“Well, tell you what — I’ve studied with the greatest swordsmen of all time — Cyrano, Scaramouche, D’artagnan, when he was young, D’artagnan, when he was old ! Errol Flynn ! And you’re really outmatched ! So if I were you, I’d get the hell out of here !!!”

“Oh, boy ! Somewhere in my future I must have done something really bad to this guy. Sometime before this. I hate what that happens.”

[In subterfuge] “That slave — he’s slipping under the wheels ! He’ll be crushed ! Can’t keep hiding ! I’m no hero, but what you gonna do ? So much for a subtle entrance.” [saves slave]

“Time is all relative… You may as well just show up and have fun.”

“Genghis Khan was tough. These guys are pussy cats.”

[In court] “I shall champion my own cause, your honor. I remember saying the same thing to Hammurabi.”

[During the Harbinger Wars] “Well, if things go the way I think they will, that’s not going to be a hell of a long time ! I’ve lived through more tragedies than anyone should ever see. The atrocities of the Nazis, the Inquisitions, the Crusades, every example of human inhumanity. And nothing, repeat, nothing even comes close to the kind of carnage that’s to come from this war. I’ve seen the future ! It’s vague, or I’ve blocked it out, but I’ve seen it ! It’s not just Harbinger against Harbinger. It’s the end of humans on Earth ! Help me stop it… I didn’t want this war to happen — but I won’t just stand by and watch this slaughter !”

DC Universe History

Ivar and his brothers, Aram & Gilad, are actually sons of Vandar Adg aka Vandal Savage. Ivar is likely opposing his father’s plans for world domination and meddling with his father’s plans and troops in various time eras.

At various frequencies ranging from days to months the warp will pop up in his vicinity and he can travel through time by jumping into these warps. If he really is in need of a time arc he can spend the fee for a High Level Connection using his Omni-Connection to instantly summon up a new one close to his person (an excellent escape mechanism). Perhaps the time warp is somehow sentient, or merely controlled subconsciously and psionically by Ivar himself. See special sections below for its further detailed workings.

Equipment:

  • Earpiece [BODY 01, Detect (time warps) 06, Notes: The device will sound off an eee-sound whenever a time warp is about to open shortly; this will enable Ivar to finish up whatever he is doing before continuing his travels into the next era.
The time warp can lead him to any place and any time, but unless controlled by his computer will produce random results (Uncontrollable, in game terms). These appear rather rarely around him – it can take a few months of time in one ear before getting the chance to move on.]
  • Universal Translator [BODY 01, Comprehend Languages 07, Recall 10, Limitation: the technology requires 16 APs of time in a new language area to function, Note: Once a language has been learned the language is retained in the databanks and is ready for use at any time by Ivar. Languages stored so far are, at the very least, Latin, French, Hungarian and German.]
  • Interactive Navigational Computer [BODY 02, Detect (time warps) 18, R#9, Notes: see special section below].

Temporal swashbuckler

While natural time arcs are usually attracted to strange places, such as the Bermuda Triangle, Easter Island and Cleveland, Ivar himself automatically attracts time warps to his current location. The location and time reached by entering a time warp seems completely random, but the destination can be controlled by certain pieces of technology).

While it is unknown exactly how Ivar attracts time warps, he sometimes looses the attractor ability altogether (play this as a Power Complication Subplot). It can take up to months before a new time warp appears on the planet.

Everywhere he goes there appears to be some sort of catastrophe or other extremely important historical event soon about to take place. This puts him in a historical adventure where he usually helps the people or sees that the event runs its natural, historical course (the warps themselves seem to, sort of, have about 6 APs of Awareness for these purposes).

The time jumps have the additional property of healing him up completely as he jumps to a new time era (if Ivar was damaged in any way before entering the warp, immediately roll a Recovery Roll as if Ivar had its Regeneration power). A time warp disappears as soon as Ivar enters it and he arrives at his new destination, which is a good thing since these time warps would rip a normal man to pieces.

Anyone with a tachyon reader can detect a time warp being opened and closed.
