Inspector Judiah Golem (Marvel Comics) (Tomb of Dracula)

Inspector Judiah Golem

Context

Golem was one of a potential new generation of vampire hunters. These were introduced in the 1991 Tomb of Dracula Limited series. While I though these had potential, they weren’t seen again.

Marvel has an entire small mythos about Dracula, vampire hunters, vampires, etc.. It sold quite well during the 1970s, and they occasionally took stabs at bringing it back.

Powers and Abilities

Golem is a skilled detective – and a psychic. He can “see” a wide variety of things. Supernatural creatures and events, the taint of illness (whether mundane or supernatural), and so on. He has a small gem chained to his wrist which glows when he concentrates on his powers, which is almost constantly.

When he needs supernatural insight (such as Occultist (Premonition) or using Awareness through Acuity, and possibly Pushing it) he will quickly enter a trance-like state. He then always experiences a vision in which he stands in a candle-lit room, and approaches a large gem within a sculpture. From this gem he is able to ascertain information to a greater degree.

Inspector Golem’s accuracy is a tremendous 87%.

History

Judiah Golem has extensive experience in the investigation of psychic and/or mystical phenomena. He seems to be with some sort of law-enforcement agency, perhaps at the Federal level. This is murky.

When Dracula worked on performing the Ritual of Ascension to become like unto a god, Golem was one of the detectives working on the resulting murders. He was the one who revealed the extent of the deaths — 666 across the country — and that those were the result of an astral  attack.

Golem also determined where the final ceremony was going to take place. Then he found Dracula’s coffin and confirmed who was behind the carnage. But he wasn’t present at the site of the final battle against Dracula.

Golem was later contacted by Katinka to form a new generation of vampire hunters. That was because many of the previous generation had been lost or had retired. The inspector apparently accepted, though what happened next remains unknown.

Description

Golem dresses in FBI black, with dark sunglasses, a black raincoat and leather gloves. His chin is very strong, and his hair is slicked back.

He’s always toying with the gem chained to his wrist.

Personality

Inspector Judiah Golem is a Spook with a capital S. He’s cold, uninvolved and eerie. He acts with a detached politeness, and often seems to be following invisible clues and omens only he can see – which is likely literally the case. He seems to believe in destiny.

Quotes

“Bag the bodies, calm the people and tell them to lock their doors.”

“Four years ago. A contaminated needle. You didn’t know.”
