Kraig (Marvel Comics) (Werewolf by Night character)

Kraig

Context

Kraig was a minor, minor part of the “horrorsploitation” wave of comic books. That took place during the early 1970s, after the Comics Code Authority  was relaxed a notch. Kraig showed up early during that era, in 1972.

He absolutely is a stock character. But that’s what makes having stats and notes about him useful, since he and his ilk are nigh-inevitable in Gothic horror stories. Also, writeups.org likes giant henchmen.

Powers & Abilities

Kraig is large, exceptionally strong, and mentally limited.

He strikes to kill without hesitation, is a good fighter, and seems highly resilient to fear.

His right hand is missing, and his prosthesis is a heavy steel one. The fingers have but limited manipulative abilities, yet they make for stout and sharp claws. Thus, Kraig can easily kill a man with one swipe.

One gets the impression that Kraig was born without a right hand (or lost it early on). And that his mental handicaps preventing him from learning to use his left hand well enough.

History

Kraig was kept by the Timlys, an odd California couple. Andrea Timly was a very minor occultist , knowing enough to start bad stuff and not enough to end it. She apparently found Kraig, took him in, and outfitted him with a ghastly prosthesis. She seemed to keep him around as a sort of bodyguard.

Kraig’s background before that is unrevealed. However, he was filled with anger about people mocking his appearance and disabilities. Kraig likely ran away from society so people would stop insulting and taunting him. Or perhaps he did snap, killed people, and went on the run.

Of wolf and man

In 1972, Nathan Timly convinced an exhausted Jack Russell to come with him to the Timly hacienda. Andrea thought that Russell knew about the mystical Darkhold, and was ready to kill the young man over that. However, Nathan intuited that Jack was telling the truth. This triggered a conflict with his domineering wife.

Meanwhile Kraig, who lived in the basement, reacted with hostility toward the “newcomer” the Timlys kept in chains. He would happily manhandle Jack. Nathan had to physically stop Kraig from killing their prisoner.

Things continued to go wrong. Kraig killed Nathan during another altercation, allowing Jack to escape. Andrea Timly sent Kraig after Jack, who had shifted to his werewolf form. Kraig would have easily killed the werewolf, but his metal hand was struck by lightning. He was incinerated.

Hours later, Andrea Timly died during an occult ritual. The candles used during the ritual, left to burn, triggered a fire that apparently destroyed the Timly hacienda.

Description

Personality

Kraig is utterly, totally consumed by the thought of people laughing at him. And now that Andrea Timly — his only friend in the world — has given him a shiny hand, he’s going to kill anybody who looks like they might laugh at him.

Kraig seems intellectually disabled, though he doesn’t seem to be a severe case either. Mostly, he seems murderously, paranoidly warped from constant exposure to hatred, rejection and ridicule.

He does the usual halting, third-person, simple dialogue for his character niche. He also hates being touched without consenting to it.

Quotes

“You *laughed* at Kraig — you think he’s stupid ! But he’s not ! He’ll cut you — destroy you — with his hand — his pretty hand !”
