History
In the dark days of the late Depression , Deborah Cundiff set out to write a book on the American Spirit, to prove that even hard times could not crush it. She traveled across the country, taking pictures and interviewing people in every small town she came to about what they felt it was to be an American.
Unknown to her, one of the people she interviewed in rural Kansas was non other than the embodiment of the American Spirit himself, Uncle Sam. Sam was greatly impressed by the young woman.
he gave to her the Torch of Truth, a mystical device that, much like Sam’s own powers, would never burn out as long as the American dream stood strong. Among the wondrous powers of the Torch was the ability to throw a ray which would instill in the target strong “American values.”
In 1942, Cundiff decided to use the powers of the Torch to become a costumed crimefighter. She joined up with the All Star Squadron. After the war, she settled down in Columbus, Ohio and was a founding member of the Columbus Crusaders.
She continued to operate as Lady Liberty until her retirement in the early 1960s. She planned to pass the Torch along to her spunky granddaughter when she was old enough, but the Torch went out in 1974. Cundiff died of cancer in 1982.
Description
In 1947, Deborah Cundiff was a very attractive woman in her late 30s. She had long red hair and tended to dress in comfortable pantsuits.
As Lady Liberty, she wore a costume very similar to the dress of the Statue of Liberty – a long flowing green robe with a spiked tiara. She wore no mask, but it is speculated that the influence of the Torch prevented bystanders from identifying her.
