Linna Yamazaki of the Knight Sabres (Bubblegum Crisis)

Linna Yamazaki

Context

Bubblegum Crisis (バブルガムクライシス) was a 1987-1991 cyberpunk  animé . It is a minor classic of the genre, especially since from a Western point of view it is an early example (the imports weren’t all that back then, especially for genre fiction).

BGC features an all-women team of vigilantes with special power armour  in a very late 1980s dystopic future. They often take on out-of-control robots that the police lacks the firepower to destroy.

Powers and Abilities

Linna’s training was mostly oriented toward dancing and entertainment. But she also developed close combat mastery.

History

MegaTōkyō 2033. After the first Kanto Earthquake, the city used Genom’s Boomers to rebuild. Unfortunately, as other earthquakes shaked the city, some of these Boomers were damaged and went on rampage. The newly founded AD Police was unable to prevent the damages done by rampaging Boomers.

Many citizens died during these rampage sessions. Linna’s parents were on those lists.

However, her natural optimism kept the orphaned 15-year-old from becoming embittered like Priss. Instead, Linna overcame her grief and pursued her dream of becoming a world class entertainer. Soon, an audition for a musical revue provided her a shot at stardom. But her dreams were shattered when the judges were dissatisfied with her performance.

At this new low point in her life, Linna met a mysterious woman. Unlike the judges, this lady was very impressed with her abilities. Now Linna’s excellent reflexes and strong will help support the Knight Sabers, as the close quarter combat specialist.

After the end of Bubblegum Crisis, Linna joined a firm as a stocks analyst. As crimes committed by the Illegal Army caused her tech stocks to plummet, she resigned, and rejoined the Knight Sabers.

Description

Linna is a beautiful woman. She has heavy short hair, and must keep a headband to prevent them for getting in her eyes.

In Bubblegum Crisis, she often wore male executive’s clothes like trousers, white shirt and tie with suspenders, jeans and a loose T-shirt, or full aerobics gear (the latter mostly during her workouts).

Personality

Linna is practical to the point of seeming superficial. As an underachiever, she’s fickle and highly materialistic. However, she’s also honest, polite, fun-loving and sympathetic to people in trouble. Her understandability makes her endearing.

She’s the most “normal” member of the Knight Sabers. She’s concerned with everyday things (like money, men, and her bad luck with cars) rather than being obsessed with vengeance or cuteness. Still, she maintains one true passion: dance.

Linna’s fighting style is flamboyant, energetic and up-close-and-personal.

DC Universe History

In the wake of the heroes and villains of the late 20th and early 21st centuries finally growing old and either retiring or dying, the world seemed to almost settle back down to normal.

However, a man named Quincy (last name unknown) used AI technology stolen from Doctor Katsuhito Stingray, and the ability to absorb foreign material from the now defunct cyborg Metallo, to create Boomers.

These machines soon found their way into every niche in modern life, from service androids and laborers, to military machines and even sex bots. However, there was a sinister plan – one that would not be known for many years. To keep his plans a secret, he had Dr Stingray assassinated in 2022, because the brilliant scientist had discovered what he was planning.

In 2025 the Great Kanto Quake destroyed much of Tōkyō, and gave Quincy the opportunity to begin his own operations. Such criminal operations would be considered simply ’rogues’ who had been damaged in the quake. As well, the reconstruction of MegaTōkyō would be the perfect opportunity to infiltrate his Boomers even more into society.

However, Quincy did not count on the daughter and son of Dr Stingray, Sylia and Mackie, being very nearly as brilliant as the Dr was. With some of the research their father had done, combined with assistance from an old and retired john Henry Irons, they constructed the Hardsuits that would be the mainstay of the Knight Sabers.

Knowing that public superheroes would not be as welcome in a time that had finally learned to live without them, they stick to the shadows – at least as much as they can wearing brilliant purple, pink and blue armors…
