Machiste (DC Comics) (Warlord ally)

Machiste is one of the main characters in DC Comics’ Warlord stories. He appeared almost at the beginning, in 1976.

Warlord is a mix of Tarzan, heroic fantasy, pulpish  land-that-time-forgot and planetary romance. And no doubt a few other things. There are swords and dinosaurs.

These here notes are primarily about porting his once hard-to-find Mayfair DC Heroes RPG stats. It’s not a full-featured character profile.

Powers and Abilities

Machiste has no superhuman powers. But he is a superb warrior. He’s brilliant at hand-to-hand combat, swordsmanship, horsemanship, and the use of a dagger.

Machiste can use the spiked mace he wears at the end of his right arm as a formidable weapon.

Machiste was born in the mysterious realm of Skartaris . He first met Travis Morgan, a US Air Force lieutenant colonel who had journeyed there, when they were both forced to serve as galley slaves aboard the ship Gryfalcon. Morgan and Machiste became friends and both were sold as gladiators.

Their labour in the galleys had already greatly strengthened their body. And the former gladiator Shebal trained them to become fighting machines.

Morgan led two hundred gladiators, including Machiste, to freedom in a revolt. These men became the core of an army that Morgan led successfully against the tyrannical King Deimos of Thera, who intended to conquer all the rest of Skartaris. As leader of this army, Morgan became known as the Warlord.

After Deimos’ defeat, Machiste went to the city of Kiro. He found an axe containing a demonic entity that took possession of his mind. The axe attached itself to Machiste’s right hand so he could no longer let go of it.

Under the demonic influence of the axe, Machiste became the tyrannical king of Kiro. Finally, Morgan severed Machiste’s right hand, thus freeing him from the axe’s spell. Machiste replaced his right hand with a mace covered with sharp spikes.

Machiste left Kiro to accompany Morgan and the Warlord’s new ally Mariah. One day Mariah was drawn through a time warp into the Skartaris of the Age of the Wizard Kings, which took place long before the coming of humanity.

Machiste, who had fallen in love with Mariah, followed her through the time portal. There they became friend with the wizard Mongo Ironhand. Machiste and Mariah lived together as lovers for a time in this past era.

More recently, Machiste and Mariah returned to the present and aided Morgan in his war against the forces of New Atlantis. With New Atlantis defeated, Machiste returned to Kiro to resume his duties as a king.

See illustration.

He’s a brave warrior and a loyal friend. He’s also a true thrill seeker.

The demanding life of a king seems to hold little attraction to him. Therefore, he’ll abandon his throne at the drop of a hat to go off adventuring with Morgan or Mariah.

He’s more easy-going than his tragedy-haunted friend, and his presence serves to lighten Morgan’s mood. The two of them often trade quips or macho banter.

“My people have proven quite capable of ruling themselves, and I fear at times they find me more of an embarrassment than anything else.”
