Mathemanic
Context
Mathemanic was a minor sort-of-opponent for the New Warriors. He appeared in several storylines through the first half of the 1990s.
He and the anti-heroes team he was with, Psionex, showed clear promise. However, this potential was never really mined beyond those few stories.

Powers and Abilities
Mathemanic is a “math telepath”. He tries out computations by altering people’s perceptions of reality, making them feel extremely heavy, weightless, aged, trapped in a maze, separated from their bodies or otherwise distorted. In DC Heroes RPG terms, that means Mental Freeze.
He later added levitation, telekinesis and a power burst to his répertoire.
Lastly, it was revealed in his “close encounters” with Night Thrasher and Terrax that he sure can take a beating. Far beyond what he should be able to endure.
History
Mathemanic was part of Psionex, an experiment by the genetics research firm GeneTech to create artificial powers in selected test subjects. MIT graduate student Thomas Sorenson was offered a place in the study. He apparently joined out of simple scientific curiosity.
The fledgling hero group the New Warriors were investigating GeneTech, and came into conflict with Psionex.
After some initial difficulties, (including getting captured), the Warriors cleaned up on Psionex handily.

The second time they clashed, it was because Psionex had decided to terminate their assosciation with GeneTech. They thus had commandeered the corporate facility. The New Warriors took on the improved and up-powered Psionex, and fought them to a standstill.
The fight was only interrupted because GeneTech’s founder, Harmon Furmintz, released the irradiated remains of Terrax, former herald of Galactus, from their storage containers. He hoped to gain Terrax’s powers and stopping the fight. But Terrax took over Furmintz’s body, destroyed GeneTech, and left to seek out the Fantastic Four.
Mathemanic and his fellow Psionex member, Impulse, assisted the New Warriors in the attempt to stop Furmintz/Terrax. Impulse attacked Terrax on his own, and Terrax broke his back, putting him out of the fight. Mathemanic was put out of the fight by collapsing rubble, which put him in a body cast for many months.
AFAIK, Mathemanic and the rest of Psionex have not been heard from since.
Description
Mathemanic is such a geek he apparently knows nothing about fashion, color sense, or even what is appropriate dress for daily wear. Imagine picking items at random from a catalog, thats’ what Mathemanic looks like. If he likes it, he adds it to his wardrobe, without worrying about what it looks like with anything else. He defies description otherwise.
Personality
Mathemanic is the quintessential science geek. However he seems to have some sense of social responsibility, otherwise he probably would not have stood up to Terrax.
Also, he enters combat with no seeming trepidation, so he is not a coward. Probably his inherent curiousity keeps him from realizing his danger most of the time.
Quotes
“She can feel the distance now. She is a part of it. Can you imagine yourself taking one step and having it transverse a universe ? Get me some Dramamine, please. I’m feeling queasy.”
DC Universe History
Mathemanic is so unusual and quirky that he probably belongs in the Doom Patrol ; other than that, I leave it to the imagination of the respective GM.
