Context

This character is an original creation. We often call these “homemades” or “homebrewed” – think home cooking or craft beer.

Many of these characters were created to take part in tabletop role-playing game sessions. Others were invented as a creative writing exercise, often as part of a community event.

As to Metis specifically – she’s not quite finished. I have to come up with a better name than “the substance”, etc. Inspirations for the character are Razorsharp, Husk, and the Techno virus.

History

Caroline gained her powers four years ago. The alien race the tabKnor had visited Earth, seeking the help of the Justice League. Their ship, pursued by enemies, crash landed near Atlanta. Caroline, who at that time lacked any shred of common sense, entered the ship. An enemy of the tabKnor had released a Hunter onto the ship.

Caroline came onto the scene of a battle between two of the tabKnor elite guards (known simply as the Shields) and the Hunter. When the Hunter killed one of the Shields (while suppressing the shields powers and safeguards), Caroline was splashed with the body substance of the alien.

Shields

The tabKnor Shield corp are the elite defense force of the tabKnor race. They are both trained from an early age, and surgically altered to prepare them for bonding with a metallic substance. The material is generally deadly, and requires heavy safeguards to be rendered safe. It might, or might not be alive.

Properly bonded to a telepathic, carefully prepared host, the substance replaces all of their body tissues. It thus grants them a vast array of self manipulative powers. The end result is slightly less powerful than a member of the Metal Men, with regen and invulnerability to boot.

The Hunters weaponry had overridden the safeguards in the substance, and it started replacing Caroline’s tissues. The other Shield was able to defeat the Hunter. Caroline was immediately placed in cryogenic suspension, until some form of aid could be worked out.

With the aid of the JLA, the alien menace threatening the tabKnor was defeated, and the tabKnor scientists could turn their attention to helping Caroline.

Meld

In the end, they could not remove the substance. They were able to trigger Caroline’s metagene. It allowed for carefully developing a low grade telepathy, to bond the substance to her. Being of a different race than the tabKnor, and not having undergone the extensive process required to create a full shield, the substance would have eventually proven fatal to Caroline.

Instead, the substance had replaced her arms totally, and under the guidance of her telepathy (which connects to the substance at a level far below rational thought – if the substance even has such) the substance was carefully integrated through her body, to enable her to use her new arms.

The end result is “Metis” as she calls herself.


Powers and abilities

She can control the substance to perform all the powers listed in the game stats, and she has full tactile feeling in her new arms. She has recently returned to Earth.

The substance is unusually sensitive to Telepathy. If Caroline’s Telepathy is ever neutralized, she would lose the contact that is the only thing keeping the substance from killing her. In the end, it’d produce a mass of the substance of roughly human size). This mass would, if the results are the same with humans as with tabKnor, be actively evil, and capable of independent action.

Other, more experienced and powerful telepaths, can subvert this link. They can give the substance orders as though they were Caroline, allowing them to control her body (basically, granting them the control power over her).

She can detect telepaths, and has an almost instinctive dislike of them, targeting them first in combat.


Personality

Generally bright and bubbly. She enjoys her powers, and is seeking new ways to learn how to use them.
