Monkey Woman (Ultraverse Malibu comics) (Solitaire enemy)

Monkey Woman

Context

So, yeah, that was peculiar.

Monkey Woman appeared in the Ultraverse, one of the early 1990s new super-hero universes created by minor publishers. Though it was interesting, the Ultraverse only lasted a few years.

*Technically*, it is now part of the Marvel Multiverse. A bit.

For ESL  folks, “having a monkey on your back” is slang for drug addiction.

Powers and Abilities

The Monkey Woman has a living baboon growing from her back. The baboon is her god (and, in fact, the whole cult’s god). It seems able to talk to her, giving advice and orders and effectively running the cult.

The Monkey Woman is also strong, ferocious and heavy. There’s also the fact that she’s heading a ruthless cult of armed fanatics and supernatural primates.

History

While presumably quite ancient, the Monkey Cult traditionally centred its activities around Africa and Caribbean. Its barbaric religion is doubled with major criminal activities, mostly having to do with international smuggling.

It also has troubles tolerating other religions. When it has the upper hand against practitioners of other religions and little risk of backlash, it will send trained monkeys to harass them and make them leave. Its history has been paved with bloody fights against voodoo  cultist, including one great victory over voodoo queens during slave revolts .

Although the cult says it has thousands of members, the truth about its manpower is currently unknown.

The cult’s credo is that the monkeys they revere are actually space gods with simian forms. They allegedly came to Africa to build a huge secret city there, and have been guiding their cult from afar. After the victory over the voodoo queens, they started to choose Monkey Women and magically graft young monkey gods on their back during childhood.

(This is likely a reference to Gorilla City in the DC Universe.)

Nuclear monkeys

In the 1990s, the Monkey Cult murdered a santeria  priestess in Cuba. She owned a great treasure – 32 nuclear warheads. When the Soviet Union took back its missiles from Cuba after the ’62 crisis , the priestess had magically convinced an officer to give her the warheads. She had kept them for 30 years.

The Monkey Cult intended to sell the warheads and use the huge profits to expand. Their customer was, however, Anton Lone. As often, dealing with Lone proved fatal.

The Monkey Cult first ran into troubles when their activities were noticed by Lone’s archenemy, Solitaire. Solitaire found the LA temple that was just opening. Although briefly captured, he forced the Cult to flee their brand new headquarter. They had to regroup on the large yacht they had used to come from the Caribbean to L.A.

Solitaire tracked them to the boat. He then apparently killed the Monkey Woman in an underwater fight. Lone’s men (Jinn and two of his gunmen) then came to the yacht and, sensing trouble, gunned down everything in their path while recovering the warheads.

Description

See illustration.

Personality

Ruthless, bloodthirsty, fanatical.

Quotes

“In the name of the gods of the treetops…”

DC Universe History

The Monkey Cult is an unusual opponent for a small team of street-level heroes with relatively low durability, that might lead one day to the formidable Grodd. If Grodd is involved, the monkey on the back of the Monkey Woman probably has mid-range psionic  abilities.
