Nene Romanova of the Knights Sabre (Bubblegum Crisis) in uniform

Nene Romanova

Context

Bubblegum Crisis (バブルガムクライシス) was a 1987-1991 cyberpunk  animé . It is a minor classic of the genre, especially since from a Western point of view it is an early example (the imports weren’t all that back then, especially for genre fiction).

BGC features an all-women team of vigilantes with special power armour  in a very late 1980s dystopic future. They often take on out-of-control robots that the police lacks the firepower to destroy.

Powers and Abilities

Nene is, above all, a master hacker.

Her training as an AD Police operator gives her extended detective abilities and basic weapons mastery.

History

In the havoc spread by the 2nd Kanto Earthquake, MegaTōkyō, and the Japanese government, are overwhelmed by the unrest level and criminality. The police, either outgunned by criminals, or overpowered by rampaging boomers, cannot guarantee citizens’ security.

So the AD Police (for ADvanced Police), is created. It’s an elite police corps, equipped with military grade riot control and anti-boomer equipment.

Unlike the other Knight Sabers, Nene is not an orphan. Raised by well-off but overly strict and nosy parents, the mischievous girl quickly became fed up and ran away from home. Always too smart for her own good, Nene breezed through the classes at her all-girl high school, despite the fact that she often cut them.

Her boredom and innate knack for computers led her to all sorts of high-tech mischief, including computer hacking, wire-tapping, and other such electronic espionage.

How she was recruited in the AD Police is not told, but she makes a living out of it, casually hacking the computer core, on a regular basis, for distraction or upgrading her marks.

Meanwhile, Sylia posted a highly complex, encrypted, “help wanted advert” program across the Net, knowing that only true hackers could ever crack it.

Nene easily deciphered it and discovered an invitation to join the Knight Sabers. She took the offer and became the final element of the team: the communications and electronic warfare expert.

Description

Nene is a cute young woman. She usually wears her ADP uniform, or very similar clothes.

Personality

Nene is open, brave, intelligent and resourceful, but is often silly, innocent and naïve. She believes that people need to be helped, and sees her work with the Knight Sabers in a somewhat romanticized light. Deep down, she desperately wants to be accepted as an equal by her fellow Knight Sabers.

Bubblegum Crisis Knight Sabre hardsuits

She’s not much of a fighter, and that’s why Priss and Linna are so hard with her. She’s the slowest, weakest, least graceful and least violent of the team. Her only hope in battle is sneakiness.

DC Universe History

In the wake of the heroes and villains of the late 20th and early 21st centuries finally growing old and either retiring or dying, the world seemed to almost settle back down to normal. However, a man named Quincy (last name unknown) used AI technology stolen from Doctor Katsuhito Stingray, and the ability to absorb foreign material from the now defunct cyborg Metallo, to create Boomers.

These machines soon found their way into every niche in modern life, from service androids and laborers, to military machines and even sex bots. However, there was a sinister plan – one that would not be known for many years. To keep his plans a secret, he had Dr Stingray assassinated in 2022, because the brilliant scientist had discovered what he was planning.

In 2025 the Great Kanto Quake destroyed much of Tōkyō, and gave Quincy the opportunity to begin his own operations. Such criminal operations would be considered simply ’rogues’ who had been damaged in the quake. As well, the reconstruction of “Megatōkyō” would be the perfect opportunity to infiltrate his Boomers even more into society.

However, Quincy did not count on the daughter and son of Dr Stingray, Sylia and Mackie, being very nearly as brilliant as the Dr was. With some of the research their father had done, combined with assistance from an old and retired John Henry Irons, they constructed the Hardsuits that would be the mainstay of the Knight Sabers.

Knowing that public superheroes would not be as welcome in a time that had finally learned to live without them, they stick to the shadows. At least as much as they can wearing bright purple, pink and blue armors…
