One-Shot running, over a white background

One-Shot

Context

This obscure villain was seen in early 1990s Dark Horse comics. But he’s so generic he could appear practically anywhere – which is why he’s got a profile.

If you want a fuller context, you can first read the character profile for Headhunter.

Powers & Abilities

One-Shot is a skilled marksman with handguns. He once shot a Predator’s throwing blade out of the air.

One-Shot seems to be as accurate when Headhunter isn’t there. This presumably means that he’s the one member of the Headhunter entourage who isn’t augmented.

We assume that his eyepiece has a zooming function for long-range shots.

His handgun seems to be a high-calibre affair built for precision shooting. One alternative would have been a sniper handgun.

With his enhanced accuracy, bullet placement skill and powerful gun, One-Shot usually lives up to his code name.

He also seems to be an experienced agent, but what skills this implies, if any, is unknown.

History

Douglas “One-Shot” Winslow was a killer working for the National Security Council. He was detailed to the entourage of Headhunter – a superhuman capable of conferring powers to his underlings. Headhunter and his entourage were usually tasked with wetwork, often on US soil and not necessarily legal.

Apparently most weren’t government employees, but mercenaries on NSC retainer. By contrast, Winslow was a Federal employee on long-term detachment with Headhunter’s task force. One gets the impression that he was there as the token civil servant on an otherwise private team.

During the 1990s, one of Headhunter’s agents, Hothouse Rose, went rogue and fled to Arcadia. Her colleagues tracked her down as Headhunter wanted Rose to keep working for him.

Rule of X

The vigilante X, seeing himself as the master of Arcadia, intervened. Headhunter had One-Shot gun him down. This is when X realised that Headhunter’s presence was depriving him of his regenerative durability power.

X recovered and successfully confronted Headhunter and his entourage. In exchange for safe passage, X demanded that Hothouse Rose and One-Shot be handed over to him.

To Winslow’s shock, Headhunter agreed. He had run out of patience with One-Shot’s awful personality.

Predator

Cut off from everything, One-Shot escaped and remained in Arcadia. He committed a half-dozen robberies to fund himself before he ran into local Federal employees.

Not caring much about Headhunter, the local NSC representative wanted to re-hire One-Shot to help with a future effort against X.

However, a Predator was at that point active in Arcadia. The deadly alien’s hit list soon came to include both One-Shot and X.

X offered an alliance to the increasingly panicking Winslow, who took the deal – but soon realise that it was a trap and he was acting as bait. X arranged for the Predator and One-Shot to be caught in a gas main explosion. Winslow is assumed to have died in the detonation.
