Penance
(St Croix)
Context
Penance was a brand-new character, introduced with the launch of the Generation X comic in 1994. Though the book started strong, in the long run it didn’t have that much of an impact on the greater X-Men mythos.
These notes are from the early 2000s, not long after Generation X was cancelled.

Powers and Abilities
Penance possesses diamond hard skin. Her hair and claws are razor sharp, and can be dangerous if touched. Her skin is so hard that anyone trying to punch her would more than likely hurt themselves.
Penance is also immune to mental contact. Anyone attempting would suffer mental backlash.
History
Penance was originally the mutant Monet Saint Croix (better known as M.). Her evil brother Marius (Emplate) transformed her into the mute Penance. After Generation X’s first battle with Emplate, Penance was recovered from his clutches. After a bit of a run around, Penance reluctantly joined Gen X.
Later, It was revealed that Penance was Monet. The person posing as Monet at the time was actually a synthesis of Monet’s sister’s Claudette and Nicole. Feeling sorry for impersonating their sister, the twins merged into Penance. This allowed the real Monet to be restored.
Still later, after another confrontation with Emplate, Penance was caught in an explosion. It caused the two twins to separate. But the strange thing is, Penance’s body remained. Thinking that it was an empty husk, the body was left in the School’s medical lab. Then Penance woke up and dug her way out.
The Other Gen X members hunted Penance down. They thought that she had mauled a young student, when in fact the real culprit was a baby sasquatch. After this ordeal, Penance carved “home” in a tree and returned with Gen X.
With the team’s recent dissolution, Penance’s current whereabouts are unknown. It is a good bet though that she might be living with Monet and the twins.

Description
Penance is a strange, oddly beautiful creature. She looks like a red skinned girl with long spike like “hair”, and long talons for hands.
She usually wears a skintight leather suit, which helps to minimize contact with her razor sharp skin.
Personality
Being unable to communicate, Penance is often mistaken for a animalistic beast. The truth is she is rather bright. But she is naturally shy (mainly because she is mute) and is often content to watch others from the shadows.
Penance has a taste for apples and also has skills in sculpting. During an ice skating trip, she carved a statue of a man with a staff out of ice. Who this person is and how he’s connected to Penance is a mystery.
DC Universe History
There is serious speculation on whether or not Penance is a mutant or some matter of mystical construct (regardless she still has the Mistrust Drawback). She could be failed experiment of Felix Faust to create a army of invincible soldiers. Or she could be from another dimension, having been brought to DC earth to be an assistant to Dr. fate or another mystic super hero.
Anyway, Penance is more or less a minor character that can be fit in with relative ease. Her origin can be changed without altering her stats, and she might make an interesting addition to the Teen Titans.
