Red Robin (Dick Grayson) (Kingdom Come)

Red Robin

(Dick Grayson) (Kingdom Come)

Context

Red Robin is an identity used by Dick Grayson in a possible future of the DC Universe. This future was chronicled in the landmark limited series Kingdom Come, published in 1996.

Our notes were taken not too long after Kingdom Come was published. As a result they’re brief (not that there’s a lot of material about most characters) and use a statting style closer to Mayfair’s.

Years after this profile was done, the Red Robin identity and costume saw use in the then-contemporary DC Universe. But that is another tale.

History

Dick Grayson aka Red Robin (formerly Nightwing, formerly Robin) went into retirement after the death of his wife, Starfire. His daughter, Nightstar, resented Dick for “letting” Starfire die, and left home shortly thereafter. In the years before Kingdom Come, Dick was very removed from the superhero lifestyle, teaching self-defense classes and acrobatics to children in New York City.

Superman convinced him to come out of retirement and join the new Justice League (coincidentally, he already had a new costume ready to go). Red Robin survived the confrontation at the Gulag because his daughter, Nightstar, had removed him to Colorado to get medical treatment after he was seriously wounded.

Dick was last seen recuperating at Wayne Manor, having reconciled his differences with both his daughter and his mentor.

Description

Red Robin wears a black leather mask and cape very similar to that of the Batman. His red shirt has a stylized bird head on it. He sports a double bandoleer of various chemical tools (smoke bombs, stun bombs, acid capsules, etc.) that he uses in his fight against crime.

Rather than the bare legs and ridiculous shorts of his youth, he wears black leggings and high black leather boots.

Personality

Red Robin has taken on the brooding seriousness of his old mentor, the Batman. Gone are the carefree days of his youth. An expression starting with the word “holy” will never pass his lips again. Robin takes his job seriously, although after being reunited with his daughter he will likely have a more relaxed demeanor.
