During the 1970s, confectioner and cakes maker Hostess advertised in major comic books. The advertisements were full-page comics starring Marvel and DC Comics characters (and Hostess products).

These comics were nonsensical and a parody of the most absurd aspects of Silver AgeSuper-hero comics from the late 1950s to the early 1970s. comics. They’re still fondly remembered for their goofiness.

Powers & Abilities

The Ricochet Monster is extremely strong (about “Class 85”, I’d assume). He can live unprotected in the vacuum of spaaaace. He cannot fly, though.

His key power is that he can return attacks to the sender. These simply bounce back, with good odds of hitting the attacker.

This power was strong enough to send back a thrown Mjolnir, or lightning summoned from yon mighty magical mallet.

“Thor meets the Ricochet Monster !” appeared in Iron Man #134, among others.

The malevolent masters from the Outer Galaxy have sent the Ricochet Monster to do… malevolent… things. Thor attempts to stop the hulking creature, but soon realises that attacks cannot go past his reflection power.

oh no

You’re not going to believe what happens next !

What happens next

The blond Asgardian throws a half-dozen fruit pies at the Ricochet Monster. “I will hurl at thee something thou wilt absorb and keep unto thyself !”, he claims. Thor thankfully stops there instead of detailing the next step.

The Ricochet Monster is enchanted to discover the light, tender crust and the real fruit filling. Thus, he apparently agrees to grab Thor’s hammer and be hurled back to the Outer Galaxy.

“Perhaps thy masters, too, shall fall under the spell of Hostess™ fruit pies”, ponders Thor, who his well-known for his pie diplomacy.

Ricochet Monster, from a Hostess Cakes comic book advert page

Large, very muscular blue humanoid drawn in the Mighty Marvel Manner.

He wears orange briefs, of course. Don’t we all.

The Ricochet Monster doesn’t speak, and seems simple.

He ponderously lumbers toward his foes, since heh, what can they do ?

Ah yes, throw fruit pies at him. Right, right.
