Rik

Game system: DC Heroes Role-Playing Game

Context

This obscure Avengers enemy appeared during the complex 1993 story arc, “The Gathering”. Which remains uncollected as of this writing.

While there isn’t much known about him, one gets the impression that he’s the Rick Jones from another reality. Which could make him a bountiful story engine if you’re so inclined.

Powers and Abilities

Rik wears an armoured vest which protects him from damage, and which powers a blaster . He is a talented shot with this pistol.

History

Rik is a native of an alternative reality. His Earth fell victim to the madness of its Sersi.

He was saved by Proctor. Proctor claimed his reality had also been a victim of his Sersi, and recruited Rik into his second team of Gatherers. These hunted down and stopped the Sersis of other dimensions before they did the same to their worlds.

Some travellers to alternate realities have trouble physically adapting to a dimension where a version of them already exists. They can be left disoriented and weakened. Proctor discovered the Gathering ritual as a way around this. It involves locating the traveller’s counterpart and killing them.

Since Rik is probably a counterpart of Rick Jones, it’s unlikely he’s undergone the Gathering.

Burn the witch

While Proctor was advancing his machinations against Sersi, some of his new Gatherers attacked the Black Knight and Sersi, without his permission. When the battle turned against them, Proctor teleported them away, and castigated them for their actions.

He soon confronted and captured Sersi, bringing her to his secret base. There, he revealed to her who he was and how he had caused her breakdown.

Proctor moved his machines to the middle of New York, and used the captive Sersi and Ute as their power sources. This began the collapse of reality. The Avengers rushed to the scene, and clashed with Proctor and his Gatherers.

When Proctor was momentarily stunned by lightning, the feedback from his link with the Gatherers knocked them all unconscious. Before Proctor could fully come to, the freed Sersi ran him through with his own Ebony Blade.

Personality

While dedicated to the Gatherer’s goal of eliminating the danger Sersi poses to the world, Rik is suspicious of Proctor’s motives and actions.

He tends to stay in support in combat, providing his team mates with support, and attacking foes from a distance.

Quotes

“Whoa ! I think we’re in trouble now !”

DC Universe History

The Gathering would probably work better in the DC Universe, where it’s already established that travellers in Hypertime cannot survive on a world where a counterpart of them already exists. Substitute Zatanna for Sersi, and the Justice League for the Avengers.
