Satana (Marvel Comics) during the 1970s

Satana Hellstrom

(1970s profile)

Satana is a Marvel Comics character who appeared during their big wave of “horrorsploitation” characters, in 1973. Along with the vampires, the mummies, the werewolves, etc. of that time, she was the succubus archetype.

These are older technical notes, not a full profile. In fact it is so old that it likely belongs to the generation when we were deriving profiles from FASERIP stats and light research. So it’ll eventually have to be replaced with a full-bore character profile.

Powers and Abilities

Satana had lots of supernatural powers, including :

  • Interdimensional teleportation.
  • Levitation.
  • Projection of concussive bolts or of soulfire (magic blast).
  • Feeding on souls (who appears as astral butterflies she catches and eat ; she usually kisses her victim).
  • Eldritch shields.
  • And so on.

She also was trained in the mystic arts by the Mephisto himself, and is an extremely competent occultist .

She was also superhumanly strong and durable, and held within herself a very powerful demon, the Basilisk. Each time she released the Basilisk on the outside world, it became more difficult for her to control (because he gained Hero Points  of his own).

To make a long thing short : Satana is the sis of Hellstorm, and hence the child of Mephisto by way of a mortal woman (she also must be half-sis to Hellfire). Unlike her bro, who became Prince Of Lies and all that bad stuff, she remained a nice succubus.

Satana was trained in occult arts by Mephisto, while the latter was posing for a mortal. She was closer to her father than her brother was. When her mortal mother discovered the truth and went insane, Mephisto left with Satana, and tutored her some more in Hell. He turned her into a succubus, and grafted a powerful demon named Basilisk to her soul.

Return to the sublunar

During a test on Earth, Satana refused to take the soul of a priest whom she considered as a friend. As a result she was disowned and ostracised by Mephisto. Satana spend years wandering Earth, helping humans against supernatural menaces. She even fought her brother, and dealt a crippling blow to the infamous N’Garai demons.

Satana sacrificed herself during an obscure Marvel Team Up issue, to save Doctor Strange who had became a werewolf. This was because she considered the life of Strange to be a better asset for humans than her own.

She managed to kill two birds with one stone, since she also tricked the Basilisk into killing itself.

The destination of Satana’s soul is unknown, but it wasn’t Mephisto’s Hell (I’ll ask Death next time we have dinner, as we do every century…)

Satana later resurfaced ; see the Satana (Hellstorm) writeup. Also, there are now some doubts whether her real father was Mephisto or he demon king known as Marduk Kurios.

Satana wears a skintight deep purple (of course) costume. There are two round holes on the sides baring her hips, and a large diamond-shaped hole on the front, starting above the breasts and ending above the pubes, baring her belly and the river between her breasts.

She wears a gold pendant looking like a demonic head with two ram-like horns, and several long tails. Her eyebrows are impossibly long and extend above her head in a horn-like motif.

The whole idea is to play a Neutral Good  succubus. Fire, brimstone and demonic metaphors abound around Satana, an inhuman witch (in a non-Wiccan sense), a drinker of souls and wielder of soulfire. And yet she’s a staunch defender of humanity, in a slightly maternal way. Amazingly enough, she loves humans, and was ready to sacrifice her life for them.

“I am Satana – who some call the Devil’s daughter. I am here to save the soul of Dr. Strange from eternal damnation — or, if he has tasted human blood, I am here to kill him. May I come in ?”
