Idealized comic book woman wielding flame

Starblaze

Power Level:
Game system: DC Heroes Role-Playing Game

Context

This character is an original creation. We often call these “homemades” or “homebrewed” – think home cooking or craft beer.

Many of these characters were created to take part in tabletop role-playing game sessions. Others were invented as a creative writing exercise, often as part of a community event.

This specific character was part of a RPG campaign run by writeups.org contributor Kal El, set in Barcelona.

Character-specific notes

  • I already have worked the details of Starblaze past and amnesia, although the player has not yet discovered them. Should I add them to the History section or to a special “secret origin” section ?
  • 5 of the 6 members of this team still know very little about the source of their powers, and the other is going through a Power Complication subplot, so such a section could be important for the characters.
  • Again, it may just be integrated into the common History section noting those events are still unknown to the character.

Editor note

The picture came from somewhere on the Internet 15+ years ago. There are no identifying notes and it doesn’t show up on reverse searches.

If somebody can identify it for crediting purposes, I’d appreciate it ’cause it’s driving me nuts — Ed.

Powers and Abilities

Starblaze:

  • Has a prodigious agility. She has extreme accuracy even with unfamiliar weaponry, and is capable of dodging a dozen gangsters shooting at her.
  • Flies as fast as a car runs.
  • Displays many different fire-themed powers:
    1. She can cover herself in flames hot enough to severely burn any non-metahuman .
    2. She can project a concentrated stream of fire which can melt steel.
    3. She can see the heat signature of her surroundings.
    4. She is quite immune to most sources of heat found on Earth.

Other assets

But she has also some more puzzling capabilities.

  • Her body seems almost superhumanly durable. She has shrugged of a couple of low caliber gun shots.
  • She heals most damage in seconds, and has recovered from a broken rib in less than half an hour.
  • She seems to need 30 times less air than normal people.

La Fuente, the warlock of the Supernova team, has the theory she may be part Fire Elemental.

She is also a charismatic dancer, skilled in both classic and modern ballet, and even some exotic dance routines she uses to impress her public.

History

Alone without any known living relative, Starblaze tries to make a life as a dancer. She also uses her alter ego to secretly help those in need she finds on her way.

She avoids thinking about the gaps in her memory. It is full of incomprehensible information lit by dying stars, shining but for an instant. Starblaze has found herself a few times already bombed with strange memories at the sight of comets, like they were able to temporally unlock the secrets of her mind. But it’s difficult to grasp on those bits of information.

Her past, so far, seems a mirage, a movie, a life that’s not real or belongs to someone else… yet, she’s there.

Més que un club

The most immediate past is clearer in her mind. She found a job as a dancer at a club in Barcelona, disguised as her alter ego. She spent her free time exploring what she remembered was her native city.

She has hazy memories of her parents perishing when their flat caught on fire. She’s also told that by age six she was handed over to the nuns of a convent in Girona . But once old enough she reportedly ran away, to avoid becoming a nun.

Most of that was told to her by the nuns themselves. She remembers almost nothing until the day she turned 18. This is when she discovered her powers. Fire (and… meteorites?) fascinated her, she was awed with her ability to fly and to regenerate, and to move as if she was made of air.

It was during one of her many flights over Barcelona, her Starblaze identity only recently established, that she saw some fire in the distance, at Collserola’s Range , Barcelona’s green lung and western border. She thus found another hero who tried to extinguish the flames: Ulises XXI, a human chameleon and psionic.

They were sighted and thought guilty of the fire… and the death of two corpses who were found, charred, on it.

Hated and feared by a world…

From that day on, she was persecuted by the police and despised by a great part of the citizens of the city. She kept claiming her innocence. But it took a long while before she and Ulises XXI started their own investigation into the fire and deaths.

In 2006, Starblaze was rehearsing near to the S.T.A.R. Labs facilities in Barcelona when a T-Rex broke loose. It turned out to be a harmless robot, used by S.T.A.R. so heroes would respond. The scientists were looking for help investigating earthquakes, who seemed triggered by a signal from the Moon. And the Patrulla Barna, the city hero team, was missing.

Màscara, La Fuente, Ulises XXI, Starblaze, Roc and Barret Blanc accepted the mission. They found a dragon hidden under the city, whose sleep was being interrupted by the lunar radio signals.

They decided to keep the hidden draconic cavern as the headquarters of their new team: Supernova.

Description

Starblaze is a stunner. A long, lush mane of silky auburn hair with fiery crimson reflections fall down her back, reaching past her rear and almost the back of her knees.

Thin stylised eyebrows arch over predatorial-looking orbs of pure energy that faintly glow like they were twins balls of fire. Their patterns seems to change through the colours of a fiery blaze, that is: from pure white to a light orange. Her sensual black lips curl into an enticing bow, making a deep contrast on her lightly tanned, unblemished skin.

The skin looks warm and silky where visible, only covered in specific spots of her body, like her bosom where a grey top with bluish tones accomplishes the task of giving her some modesty while displaying plenty of cleavage. A pair of gloves cover her delicate and slim hands of the same light grey hue of her boots that rise up to her mid-calves.

Pants coloured like her top possessively grip on her narrow waist offering glimpses of her silky skin alongside of her legs, showing off the hourglass figure of her slender silhouette.

Beatriz looks almost exactly like Starblaze, but her eyes are black and she often sports her hair braided or collected up in a bun, kept in place by a pair of hairsticks. Of course, she doesn’t dresses in spandex as Beatriz… except when dancing.

Personality

Starblaze is like fire: unpredictable, passionate, ardent, yet loyal… to a certain degree. At the same time, many of the feelings of Starblaze remain hidden by a cold mask that may have much of real: her past is empty of memories, but also of relationships, and even of interest to recover it all.

Fierce and hot and she sometimes shows, there’s a very cold and sometimes even ruthless, under the right light. Life has proven over and over again that humans aren’t naturally good-willed, though that doesn’t mean that some are: she knows they do, and they’re a rarity in a world that seems to only reward those who exhibit high doses of stupidity.

Beatriz makes no real effort to make a difference between her normal and heroic persona, other than using different names and clothes, and hiding the fact she is Starblaze just so she can work and escape the police pressure.

Thus, she doesn’t have the Secret Identity drawback although she tries to keep her identity secret: if her Starblaze persona was revealed she would have to search for a new job under a false name but she has no known family nor close friends outside Supernova, and she is cold enough to cope with it, so there wouldn’t be any personal lose.

Strangely for the rest of the team (specially her friend Ulises XXI), Starblaze doesn’t care a bit about her amnesia and she hasn’t made a single movement to discover her origin.

Ulises XXI, whom she knew before the foundation of Supernova, is her dearest teammate, the closer to a friend she’s ever had, and there are rumour’s they have even had some romantic relationship, although that has mostly been boasted by the blue guy and unconfirmed by Starblaze.

Quotes

“I don’t care about my past : I have too much future to live”

“I will help you in your quest, Ulises: I don’t mind who I am, but I want to know who framed us : that forest was in flames before we met there, and yet there seems to be people who saw us starting it… lies, like the nuns’. That sets me on fire.”

“Sister Meri, this body was never meant to stay in your cold convent. It’s too hot for that.”
