Superman in 1938

(Clark Kent in 1938)

This old profile is primarily about quick game stats for the earliest version of Superman, in 1938. We’ve since written something much more thorough and modern, the Superman (Chronicles) profile.

The older notes are mostly kept to have an alternative, simpler set of numbers.

  • Real Name: Clark Kent.
  • Height: 6’3” Weight: 225lbs. Age: 35
  • Eyes: Blue Hair: Black

This Superman was not around for long. He first appeared in a fan published science fiction magazine titled Scientifiction (I think, not sure, but that is what I recall) published in 1934. Siegel & Shuster at first tried to start him as a newspaper strip but failed until he appeared in Action # 1.

For the first year he was a “super man” doing no more then might be done by a human, just far, far better. His S was a bit cruder looking that it later came to be, and at least one time he was shown not wearing boots but what looked like toe shoes and straps tied just the above the calves ! He also seemed to be drawn older looking that most of the later Supermen say around ±35.

He was also a far more gruff type of Superman, with a lot in common with Siegel & Shuster’s other hero of the time “Slam” Bradley.

This Superman had an effect on the early versions of the cartoon Superman. But as the comic moved on and picked up the idea of flying which first showed up on the radio program this Superman was soon forgotten.

“Let’s see how you like being shoved around pal !”
