Sharkboy (Taylor Lautner in Sharkboy and Lavagirl)

Sharkboy

Power Level:
Game system: DC Heroes Role-Playing Game

Context

The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl is a 2005 children’s fantasy movie.

It features Max, an unhappy little boy who dreams stories and super-heroes for solace. One day two of the super-hero kids he made up, Sharkboy and Lavagirl, impossibly show up in his life. They need his urgent help to save their imaginary world, Planet Drool.

The scenario was partially invented by kids, and the movie very much as child’s perspective. However, the theatre release used an early, mediocre 3D format that resulted in poor critics.

Sharkboy is a young aquatic character with an attitude, played by Taylor Lautner. My nephew was really into this character in 2005.

Powers & Abilities

Sharkboy is half boy half shark. He is at home beneath the waves and has the ability to stay there for long amounts of time.

He is a martial artist and uses an acrobatic style.

Sharkboy has some degree of super strength.

Sharkboy’s hands may look normal but he can use them as fierce talons. He can also scratch on a chalkboard to make a horrendous screeching noise, all the while drawing on it at the same time.

Max mentions Sharkboy has shark-like reflexes and internal radar. Perhaps the internal radar is something like sonar since Sharkboy has no vision powers to see in the murky depths. Although nothing is demonstrated in the film.

Sharkboy does have anger issues. However, he’s been able to channel his anger into productive destruction. When enraged, his perfect teeth become sharpened shark teeth!

History

Sharkboy was not always half-shark half-boy.

He was a marine biologist, or at least, in training. His father studied great white sharks and called his son Sharkboy because of how much he loved to care for the sharks. He made them sushi and gave them all names – Goodmilk, Piggy, Eggback, and Kraken (who was the largest of the four).

Sharkboy and Lavagirl ready to fight

But one day an incredible mysterious storm appeared, it swept away his father’s entire lab. Thanks to their life rafts, Sharkboy and his father survived but they survived on different sides of the wreckage, each floating off in a different direction. Sharkboy was completely alone.

Almost completely, one of the sharks recognized him. The shark said “don’t take a bite out of him boys, he’s a friend.” They took Sharkboy to their cave home where he’d be safe and dry.

His new family would be the sharks. Hundreds of sharks. These sharks raised him as one of their own, training him in the ways of the shark. To live by instinct and instinct alone.

Eventually, he grew gills and sharp talons for claws. His teeth sharpened themselves to a point. He grew fins. All sorts of fins.

Meet Max

While fishing, Max who was 10 years old met up with Sharkboy and snuck him home. Max’s parents were too busy to notice. So, Sharkboy stayed with Max; in the shower, filled to the top of course. All this time, Sharkboy explained, he’d been travelling the universe in search of his father.

Sharkboy and Lavagirl in action

It was here, one night, Max and Sharkboy met Lavagirl. She brought a cryptic message of an undetermined danger and she and Sharkboy left Max’s house together.

Many months later after Max had started back to school, Sharkboy and Lavagirl returned. A voice told him “open your eyes but stay dreaming”; Sharkboy and Lavagirl appeared in Max’s house and ate the cookies his mother had made.

The next day at school, a second mysterious storm blew in. Sharkboy and Lavagirl crashed through a window into Max’s 4th grade classroom to request his help.

When he accepted, they took Max with them back to Planet Drool on board the Shark Rocket. Planet Drool. A planet of Max’s creation was a place so cool you’ll drool and it was in trouble. The trio had to travel through a landscape of Max’s mind to reach the dream lair.

Is Drool doomed ?

Sharkboy and Lavagirl saved some children from an out-of-control rollercoaster and then they confronted Mr. Electric. He quickly dropped them in a part of Planet Drool called the Dream Graveyard where some of Max’s old dreams had been dumped.

There they found Tobor, a robot toy Max owned that he never finished putting together. The robot offered them a lift to other parts of the planet.

They were pursued by Mr. Electric and his “plug hounds” across the planet. Max planned to visit the Ice Princess and obtain the Crystal Heart which could freeze time. This would give them enough time to get to the center of Planet Drool and fix the dreamworld using Max’s daydreaming. However, they were captured by Mr. Electric.

He delivered the heroes to Linus, a real world rival, or his Planet Drool incarnation “Minus”. Minus had altered the dreamworld with Max’s own Dream Journal. Max was able to retrieve the Dream Journal from Minus whilst he slept then escape.

Max then informed Sharkboy of his father via his journal. Sharkboy’s father was alive. When Lavagirl wished to find out what it said about her, she accidentally burned the book to ash.

Sharkboy and Lavagirl looking approachable

With little time left before the dreamworld would become completely corrupted, Max, Sharkboy and Lavagirl reached the Ice Princess. She handed over the Crystal Heart but they found that they were too late to stop the corruption.

Mr. Electric fooled Sharkboy into jumping into water filled with electric eels, seemingly killing him. Lavagirl jumped into the water to rescue Sharkboy but died moments later.

Inceptions

Tobor appeared and convinced Max to dream a better, unselfish dream, which in turn revived Sharkboy who then raced Lavagirl to the top of a volcano where she too was revived. Max gained dream powers and battled Minus, defeated him, then offered to make a better cooperative dream world with him, which Minus agreed to.

Mr. Electric refuses to accept the new dream world, and flies off to Earth to kill Max whilst he is dreaming. Max awakens back in his classroom in the middle of a storm. Mr. Electric materializes before Max and his teacher. Max’s parents are caught in the storm but saved by Sharkboy and Lavagirl.

Max gives the Crystal Heart to Marissa, allowing her to gain the Ice Princess’ powers and defeat Mr. Electric by freezing him. Max’s teacher, Linus and Max make peace with one another. Max was reunited with his parents.

Description

Sharkboy has gills where his ribs are, sharp pointed teeth, and a shark’s dorsal fin on his back. He also has dorsal-like fins on his wrists and ankles. Though he has human looking feet and boots his footprints look like a large creature’s foot with three clawed toes.

Years later, actor Taylor Lautner would grow up into famously shirtless werewolf – one frequently deemed to be amazingly attractive by interested parties.

Personality

Sharkboy is quite confident but a bit arrogant. He’s afraid of little and a bit of an anti-hero with a chip on his shoulder. Sharkboy is aggressive and sometimes displays an explosive anger.

Sharkboy and Lavagirl with Max

With girls, especially Lavagirl, Sharkboy plays the strong silent type becoming jealous when she shows attention to other boys. Sharkboy becomes jealous of Max because Lava Girl acts overly motherly to Max.

Sharkboy loves raw fish and seafood but doesn’t necessarily like chocolate. Though he did take a bite out of Max’s giant cookies she made for his class.

Quotes

“Showtime.”

“You must keep moving to survive. Always go forward never back.”

(When facing with Mr. Electric) “Dreams can destroy you can’t they, my instincts tell me that is so.”

(After Max had awakened his super intelligent, oracle-like, robot Tobor)
Sharkboy: “Am I king of the ocean or what ?”
Tobor: “No, sorry.”

“Still hungry, Max ? How about a knuckle sandwich.”

“Can’t… fight… my instincts !”

(Lavagirl rescued Sharkboy from drowning but she was dowsed and Max said she would die)
Sharkboy: “Look.” (They see Lavagirl’s volcano home in the distance)
Max: “Lava. We have to get her to that volcano.”
Sharkboy: “I’ll go, I’m stronger and faster.”
Max: “You’ll burn up.”
(Sharkboy scoops her up)
Sharkboy: “You sure this will save her ?”
Max: “It’ll do more than save her !”

DCU History

Sharkboy and Lavagirl could be placed into the DCU without too much issue. I think you’d either want to separate them from Max completely or use them as heroes in the dream dimension. If separated, Sharkboy would be young teen hero in search of his missing father.
