Context

This character is an original creation. We often call these “homemades” or “homebrewed” – think home cooking or craft beer.

Many of these characters were created to take part in tabletop role-playing game sessions. Others were invented as a creative writing exercise, often as part of a community event.

Powers and Abilities

Even as a child, Henric seemed extraordinarily lucky. Later on he discovered that he was a shapechanger. Due to a life in contact with the fairy world he was not afraid of it and started exploring his powers. Soon it was clear that he was not limited by natural animal forms, but also to monsters of legend and myth, and even recently created ones in popular fantasy.

During the Queen of Fables’ invasion of Earth, Henric discovered he was not human anymore. He is now a supernatural entity himself with unnatural resilience (in DC Heroes RPG terms BODY, Mind over matter). And he is sometimes imbued by a charming presence and a piercing perception that are not of this world (Power Reserve).

History

Henric was a very special boy when he was little. When he had the odds against him, he succeeded where others failed. But besides this form of magic, Henric was child with the secret that most children would have liked to have. He knew the fairies.

In remote Norwegian woods, when he was just a child, he met the fairy Gudrun. They became friends and she took him to a party within the Faerie Dimension. But the Queen of Faerie had decreed that only the fae would go to the party. While Gudrun couldn’t make Henric a magical being, she discovered the spark of magic inside him and just awakened it.

To the boy it only meant that he could get in, as he didn’t notice anything new in him. But when he returned home, and as years went by, he started discovering his newly awakened powers. He could turn into animals.

At first it was a wolf, later a lion, a dog, a mouse… until one day he turned into a pegasus  and discovered his power was not limited to beasts this side of the dream.

He eventually fine tuned his powers as to become intelligent fantasy creatures: elves, pixies, devils… even dragons ! But he never could cross again the frontier to the Faerie.

Hail to the Queen, baby

In fact, he never again met his friend Gudrun until 20 years later in London. She was enslaved by the Queen of Fables during her brief invasion of the Earth. He helped her escape.

By that point, he was a successful fantasy writer for children in Norway. That was against his father’s wishes, who thought he should be scientist. Henric was trying to bring fantasy again to their lives, so polluted by the daily, material existence.

He had even helped a friend scientist to give a robot he was building, HK-47, a moral frame of reference by telling him stories and tales. Gudrun recommended him to use his powers to inspire others, too, and thus his identity as Valfadir (“Lord of all the living things”) was crafted.

Some weeks later he was contacted by Dr. Mist, who chose him as the first piece of his new Global Guardians.

Description

Tall, thin Scandinavian of an athletic though not overbuilt frame. His tanned skin (inherited of his Brazilian mother) attractively contrasts with his dark fair hair and his blue eyes. He uses to dress informal and sports a two days beard.

As Valfadir, he uses to take the shape of an Elandrin, a strong elven-like creature of distinguished features.

(Likely a reference or misspelling to these guys  — Ed.).

Personality

Henric is quite confident in his abilities, and that in the end he will win any fight and overcome any difficulty.

In combat, he tries to display at least a couple of different mythic creatures unless lifes are at a stake, in which case he tries the one that looks more efficient. He always prefers to shapechange into a legendary instead of a real animal.

In his private life, he wants to demonstrate his father that he can earn a wealthy life with his fantasy tales.

Design Notes

A new houserule we use is that extra (beyond the first two) attributes, powers or skills boosted by Damage Absorption or Power Reserve become +1FC instead of +5BC. Valfadir’s Familiarity with HK-47 is put in as he recently earned full RAPs in a Scientist (Analysis) check on him.

He, then, can attempt repairs with him even as he doesn’t have the Gadgetry skill (it allows unskilled Gadgetry (Build) rolls, with the usual -2cs penalty, to repair HK-47, a penalty that his other Familiarity in Robotics neutralizes).
