Powers and Abilities

The White Dragon is a superior martial artist, who once managed to claw Spider-Man (Peter Parker) himself. He can easily beat even experienced street fighters, but was completely outmatched by Moon Knight (Marc Spector).

His henchmen are standard street gang types with era-appropriate weapons (in the 1970s that meant switchblades, saps and nunchakus). They wear a jacket with a stylised golden dragon on the back.

One of his men seemed significantly tougher – one Yo Ling, who was bald, muscular and bare-chested, with a wicked hook replacing his right hand.

Costume

His costume :

  • Can project a stream of flame or green knockout gas from the mask.
  • Has gloves are tipped with steel claws coated with a knockout drug.
  • Is presumably reinforced, since bullet impacts didn’t seem to hurt as much as they should. In costume, the White Dragon could also withstand a swipe from the Prowler (Hobbie Brown)’s claws.

In the White Dragon’s second costume the flames are no longer projected from the mask’s nostrils. They come from a larger flamethrowing module set in the mouth.

The mask can also now self-destruct thanks to an incendiary charge on a short timer, which can be useful to cover a retreat Given the shape of the new mask it is possible that it doubles as a gas mask.

Neither the claws nor the gas were demonstrated in the second version of the White Dragon costume. But our game stats assume that they are still there.

History

The White Dragon seems to be a Chinese-American street tough. His family is originally from Guǎngdōng/Canton/广东.

In 1978 he attempted to unite a number of street gang in Manhattan’s Chinatown to form his own set, the Dragon Lords. As he performed shows of force, killing at least one gang leader in a kung-fu duel, he learned of one Philip Chang. Mr. Chang was a deadly mob enforcer who had fled Hong Kong to live in New York City.

The Dragon tried to force him to join his gang. But Chang resisted him as he was now a pacifist. Spider-Man (Peter Parker) intervened.

The White Dragon defeated and nearly executed Spidey by dumping him into a vat of burning oil. But our hero escaped and defeated the would-be gang lord in front of his men.

The magic dragon lived by the sea

Though Spider-Man expected the White Dragon to be in jail for 10 to 20, the villain resurfaced in 1984.

This time he was secretly backed by the Kingpin (Wilson Fisk). Thus, his new version of the Dragon Lords became a presence in Chinatown. This attracted the attention of the Tiger’s Claw, a neighbourhood watch tong.

White Dragon tries to burn Spider-Man

The Dragon Lords gained the upper hand as the White Dragon killed Do Yang, the Tiger’s Claw’s elder. The tong thus contacted Moon Knight (Marc Spector), an ally of Do Yang. They also tried to convince Philip Chang to help them.

Though Mr. Chang was sworn to non-violence, he confided about the situation to Peter Parker. Moon Knight and Spider-Man then defeated the White Dragon and the Dragon Lords. Moon Knight publicly revealed that the Dragon was an agent of outsiders, discrediting him.

And frolicked in the autumn mist

This apparently worked, since the White Dragon wasn’t seen again until 1992. Even then he was heading a gang with but a half-dozen thugs (the Flying Dragons). He was merely tasked with frightening away vagrants to facilitate erecting a new building.

Martial artist Abe Brown and his brother the Prowler intervened, but were stalemated against the White Dragon and his men. Howbeit, the arrival of the neighbourhood association defending the local homeless persons forced the Dragon to flee.

The White Dragon apparently reconstituted his power base, still focused on Chinese-American street gangs. The scope of his operation remains unrevealed, but he was present in Brooklyn — specifically Sunset Park  — until his men were killed by agents of Mr. Negative (Martin Li).

In a land called Honali

During the late 2000s the Hood (Parker Robbins) rose to dominate the New York City underworld. The White Dragon wisely sworn allegiance. But Mr. Negative did not, and Robbins tasked the White Dragon with intimidating Li and taking over his Chinatown operations.

White Dragon (Marvel Comics)

Strutting and threatening, the White Dragon confronted Mr. Negative. But he just ended up mind-controlled by Li. Mr. Negative sent the White Dragon to attack the Hood’s headquarters and send a message. Robbins stopped the Dragon by emptying his .45 into him.

This reportedly killed the White Dragon. However such reports may have been exaggerated, since the White Dragon is thought to wear body armour.

Little Jackie Paper loved that rascal

In 2013, the White Dragon and his gang (wearing white clothing and white hoods) clashed with the Owl (Leland Owlsley) and his men over a turf dispute.

Owlsley accused the White Dragon of being a new person who bought the identity and costume from Roderick Kingsley. Whether he was correct is unrevealed.

Description

See illustrations.

Personality

A thug and a bully, angling for money and influence. He’s reasonably intelligent and articulate, but that’s about it.

Despite being an Asian character in a 1970s American super-hero comic book, he doesn’t have a thing about honour. In fact, he is quite underhanded and manipulative.

He has evidenced racism against people with roots in poorer Chinese provinces, such as Fújiàn.

Quotes

“Away from me, you young fool ! Away before I do worse to you than I’ve done to your cowardly friend.”

“Bah ! You are nothing to the Dragon ! Nothing that cannot be squashed ! HiiiiiiiyYAAAHHH !”

White Dragon vs. Spider-Man

“Attention, people of Chinatown ! Come out of your homes ! Come to witness the fate of all who defy the White Dragon !”

DC Universe History

Perhaps a renegade member of the ahsram where Green Arrow and son were trained.

He occasionally clashed with the members of “Team Arrow” in back-up strips in Detective Comics. Perhaps he was an ally of Barricade who came onto his own after Barricade was seemingly destroyed.

Another possibility is to have him be a minor League of Assassins hitman. Or a former agent of Doctor Moon.
