Wonderboy of the 26th century

Power Level:
Game system: DC Heroes Role-Playing Game

Context

This character is an original creation. We often call these “homemades” or “homebrewed” – think home cooking or craft beer.

Many of these characters were created to take part in tabletop role-playing game sessions. Others were invented as a creative writing exercise, often as part of a community event.

Universe 3001

This specific character was created for Universe 3001, which is my homemade game universe. It’s basically a combined DCU/Marvel campaign, and most of my focus is on the 30th and 31st century — hence the 3001 designation.

This character is not from that century, though. The 26th century is an important period in my timeline, as it saw the rise of Apocalypse in World War V and his downfall in World War VI. These events take the place of DC’s Great Disaster and explain much of the lost knowledge and slowed technological advance between the 20th and 30th centuries.

This character began life as a childhood character that I’d never actually written up. It’s a companion to the Wondergirl writeup. Wonderboy and Wondergirl (you know, the Wonder Twins) in my original, conceived-at-age-10 idea, were the children of Superman.

I thought of them when writing a history for Powerpax 3001 and have recast them as 26th century characters with Amazonian as well as Kryptonian connections.

Powers & Abilities

Wonderboy has almost exactly half of Superman’s powers: super-strength, super-breath, super-hearing, flight, and total recall. Despite his fairly dilute Kryptonian DNA, he appears to have all of these abilities at more-or-less full Kryptonian strength.

Curiously, his twin sister has all the gifts he lacks (invulnerability, superspeed, super-vision, including Heat Vision, and super-ventriloquism), and none of the powers he possesses, suggesting that something more than simple genetics is at work.

In any case, Wonderboy’s strength makes him deadly in battle, and with his flying power he’s highly mobile. Because he’s not invulnerable, he’s practiced a lot with his Super Breath, allowing him to do sophisticated tricks including the infamous “super cold breath”, freezing targets in ice.

He’s also been intensively trained by his Amazonian tutors, driving him to learn as fast as possible and making full use of his photographic memory. He’s a remarkably skilled warrior for his age. He’s good at hand-to-hand and melee combat and learned in military tactics.

Man of Tissue

Despite Wonderboy’s super-strength, he’s not at all invulnerable. His martial training has therefore focused on defensive tactics. He wields a polearm to keep attackers back (aided by use of flight and super-breath if he needs to create some distance) and parry weapons.

He used to wear Amazonian armor specially designed for him, but he has outgrown it. Since the fall of Themyscira Jocon lacks the resources to get it replaced. As a result, in addition to super-breath, he also frequently makes use of thrown weapons and objects.

If he needs to use his strength, his father’s rules and Amazonian ethics both incline him to restraint. He’ll generally start off with an EV of around 08. If that doesn’t work, though, he’ll escalate fairly dramatically, to around EV 15. After that, he’ll go all out.

In any case, when he resorts to his strength he will generally hit and run. He will fly in swinging, then fly out again, rather than staying in one spot to duke it out. This is occasionally frustrating for him, but generally he understands the tactical need.

When he gets too fed up with it, he tends to channel some of his strength and aggression into a shockwave attack.

History

See the Wondergirl 3001 writeup.

Description

Fit and muscular, already tall and broad-shouldered for his age, with black hair and blue eyes. He wears a bodysuit in blue and black, mirroring his sister’s red and black.

There is a starfield (reminiscent of the post-reboot LSH uniforms) in the shape of a stylized “S” shield on his chest.

Personality

Jocon is a somewhat introverted young man. He is brave, devoted to his sister, and resolute in his desire to bring Apocalypse down. But he has also internalized much grief and loss.

He’s much more cautious than Elna, very aware that neither he nor those around him are invulnerable. He’s also just generally quieter, more studious, and more prone to brood over the losses he’s seen.

He’s extremely close to his twin, despite their different personalities. He tends to follow her lead in most things.

Quotes

“Wonder Twin powers, activate !” (His sister glares.) “Whatev, it’s a better battle cry than ’Great Krypton !‘”

Mark 3001 Kryptonian Vulnerabilities (Modified)

Kryptonian Vulnerabilities in Universe 3001 are about what you’d expect, with a few tweaks. There are more tweaks in Jocon’s case, given his half-breed status.

He has weaknesses to kryptonite, “red solar radiation”, and magic, but since he’s not invulnerable to begin with, the effects are not quite as pronounced with him as with his sister.

Green Kryptonite (other forms are rumored but their existence is uncertain), range of 2 APs

  • Rapid Gradual Loss Vulnerability (All Attributes and Powers lose 3 APs per Phase).
  • Attack Vulnerability (-1 CS OV/RV vs. Green Kryptonite attacks).
  • Fatal Vulnerability.

“Red Solar Rays”, Range of 0 APs

  • Gradual Loss Vulnerability (all Attributes and Powers, after 48 hours without exposure to a yellow sun). Upon return to the influence of a yellow sun, powers are gradually restored at the same rate they were gradually lost.
  • Attack Vulnerability (-1 CS OV/RV vs. Red Solar attacks).

Magic

  • Partial Attack Vulnerability (Magical or Mystic-Linked attacks of any type, – 1CS RV).

Genre

Universe 3001 is a Mock Real Genre. Pushing is automatically Fatiguing (using the RAPs from the Push attempt, not the total APs of Power, to measure Fatigue).
