The X copycat killer with a cavalry sabre

X Copycat Killer

(Jeffrey Birch)

Context

This guy appeared early during the run of the Dark Horse’s super-heroes setting, in the early 1990s. You’ll likely want to first read the X character profile for context.

As a tough psycho impersonating a killer vigilante, he’s a natural scenario in a “grim streets” type campaign.

Powers and Abilities

Birch is a huge bodybuilder with police training, and an excellent fighter with a surprising variety of weapons.

History

Jeffrey Birch was born with another surname, but his mother remarried quickly after his father was convicted. Who Birch’s father was and why he was convicted is unrevealed. Birch stated that his father had a “good idea” but that other people framed him and had him sent in prison.

20 years later Birch’s father died, a month before his execution was to take place. Birch, now a policeman, ardently wished to avenge him.

Impersonator

It was when X started operating on the waterfront that Birch came up with a plan. He would just kill the five people he thought were responsible for his father’s death, and let X receive the blame. When X’s campaign reached new heights via the murder of a corrupt candidate to Congress, Birch disguised himself as X and killed his targets.

However, the impersonator was found out by his superior, Chief Bremner. Birch was ready to execute Bremner X-style when the true X intervened. Birch claimed that they could work together since both were serving the cause of justice, mistaking X for a normal vigilante.

X killed Birch with his own cavalry sword. He then executed Bremner since the later had been marked with an X during the fight. X stated that he would have targeted Bremner sooner or later anyway.

Description

Birch is an experienced bodybuilder, with huge veiny arms.

Personality

Birch is a third-tier, warped vigilante. He wants justice and is not really bothered by the means he has to employ to obtain it.

He seems to have a fetish about weapons, collecting a large variety of guns and melee weapons.

DC Universe History

As long as X exists, this kind of guy is a logical consequence. Of course, Birch could also ply his trade by impersonating another vigilante who kills – such as Wild Dog or the original Black Spider.
