Yukon Jack of Alpha Flight (Marvel Comics)

Yukon Jack

Power Level:
Game system: DC Heroes Role-Playing Game

Yukon Jack was seen in the brief-lived, 2004-2005 version of Marvel’s Alpha Flight. It was mostly a comedy book. Personally I liked it, but it seems to have been poorly considered overall.

The entire team was apparently killed off in a throwaway panel in 2006.

  • Real Name: Yukotujakzurjimozoata.
  • Marital Status: Single.
  • Known Relatives: Makkamakkamaktsptoo (father).
  • Group Affiliation: Member of Alpha Flight II.
  • Base Of Operations: Montreal (formerly the hidden first nation of Kemteron).
  • Height: 5’11” Weight: 190 lbs.
  • Eyes: White on black. Hair: Black

Powers and Abilities

Yukotujakzurjimozoata seems to possess borderline superhuman physical prowess. He is definitely a formidable fighter. He usually fights with a dagger made out of a bone that seems pretty dangerous.

Yukon Jack has demonstrated two distinct superhuman abilities.

  • He once made his hand glow so that he and Major Mapleleaf II could see in a dark tunnel.
  • He can also have the strange bony patterns on his chest and right shoulder levitate a bit away from his body. Very sharp, levitating bone “links” then appear between the two patterns. He seems able to telekinetically control this sharp “chain”, resulting in a whirlwind flexible blade that can lay waste to numerous opponents around him.
This ability allowed him to defeat a large number of Box-like robots, and even the old Gamma Flight team. On the other hand, this master attack seems to drain him.

When not facing numerous opponents alone, he just fights with his body and dagger.

Yukon Jack is the heir of a hidden civilisation thriving deep into the Canadian wilderness. The Kemteronians seem to have avoided contact with the outside world for tens of thousands of years. Howbeit, they do have secret contacts with the Canadian government through their superhumanly long-lived king.

Although he had buried many of his descendants by outliving them all, Makkamakkamaktsptoo was expecting to die within Yukotujakzurjimozoata’s lifetime. This was a problem. Although he didn’t realize it, Yukotujakzurjimozoata was very unpopular and generally regarded as an staggeringly arrogant imbecile. His father knew this, and shared that opinion.

Walter Langkowski, aka Sasquatch, first attempted to recruit Yukon Jack for his new Alpha Flight team by approaching him directly, but completely failed. He then tried an alternate approach by dealing with Makkamakkamaktsptoo.

Considering that having his son be exposed to the outside world could only help in making him less of a prick, and that the thick roll of large bills Langkowski handed him could buy lots of things, Makkamakkamaktsptoo drugged his son. Then he had Langkowski carry him away unconscious.

Taking flight

Yukotujakzurjimozoata’s absence, when it became known to his people, became a cause for major celebration. When he came back from the first major Alpha Flight mission, Yukon Jack spied the feast. He was shocked to discover what he never suspected – that he was considered to be such a jerk by everyone. He then decided to continue adventuring with Alpha Flight.

This new, chaotic version of Alpha Flight had a handful of adventures. They rescued the lost team and even brought back the classic Alpha Flight after some temporal manipulations. For a while, Yukon Jack unilaterally decided Puck (Zuzha Yu) to be his wife. This faded when he realized she was actually pursuing Major Mapleleaf (Louis Sadler, Jr.).

Yukon Jack vs. Box robots

When the new Alpha Flight dissolved after a year, Yukon Jack went back to his home culture slightly less insufferable. He married the time-displaced magical echo of Snowbird so she could eventually rule at his side.

There were various hints about the past of the Alpha Flight II members that looked interesting but were never explained. In particular Yukon Jack had several quiet flashbacks to himself crawling on the ground with a large knife stuck into his chest. What happened is unknown, but that seems to be an important event in his past, maybe explaining part of his personality.

Yukotujakzurjimozoata is an intensely haughty and serious person. He expects to be instantly obeyed by everyone. He’s so arrogant he’ll take decisions for others as a matter of course, especially for women.

He definitely considers his race to be better than humans, and himself to be a super-mighty warrior. Obviously, since he’s such a superior person and future ruler of a great people, that he possesses super-powers is inevitable. Or at least it is in his mind.

Asides from the whole superiority thing, Yukon Jack comes across as a grim Tarzan-like woodrunner and Conan-like barbarian. Interestingly, his speech is even more pseudo-Shakespearian than Thor’. It is likely his race learned English from early settlers, and continue to address outsiders in this sort of English since they’ve had so few contacts with humans.

“Have at thee, base scoundrels !”

“I am heir to an entire nation, doth know.”

“Verily, womangirl — ’twas just pondering the same alternative.”

“Is this how things art done in the ‘civilized’ world ?”

“Enough prattle ! As leader of my own race, I will not gamble on your fantasy of a utopian society ! This is war… and in war, blood — sometimes ’innocent‘ blood — is spilled !”

“’tis unlikely thou couldst pronounce my name — e‘en ’twere thou sober, mortal. Away from this place, lest it be thou entrails which adorn yon leaves on the morrow.”

“By the twin gods of sun and moon ! What manner of mortal art thou that thou couldst ‘sneak up’ on me ?”

“A pox on all thine heads ! To think one such as I would serve with one such as thee ? I be much too busy attending affairs of state than to embrace such folly !”

“By the multi-hued illumination of the aurora borealis ! Who wouldst dare to ambush my sacred self ?!”

“Greetings, lady. I am a god among men.”

“Nay ! I say thee nay ! I cans’t raise arms against a beast of the land !”
